Dr Hallada, Questions and Answers

I would like to see Dr Hallada start a weekly question and answer thread concerning dog health issues. I realize he is stuck all the way out there on the West Coast and spends a lot of time on the golf course, but I believe this service would be so valuable to us hound owners.

Apparently he knows something how to keep one right, he is consistently winning with Redbones. And from the looks of his Texan handler, he knows how to keep him healthy as well.

What about it Doc, you up for it?

I had Tony get 15 pounds of hamburger for Cali after the PKC World Hunt because she was losing weight. Some how it disappeared in a few days. lol

I'd be glad to get something going here. Did you want info on how to keep your dog healthy or the handler?

I have a quick question. I have been using the Safeguard Goat Wormer on my dogs with great results. I am using the dosage you recommended in another thread of 1cc per 5 lbs of body weight. Would that be the same dosage for puppies?

Yes

This is a very safe wormer with very little chance of overdosing in dogs. Be sure to run routing fecal samples to be sure there are no resistance issues in your kennel to these wormers. I recommend alternating these wormers every 2 weeks with Pyrantel Pamoate until the pups are at least 4 months old. Four months is a good time to have the stool examined by your vet or have them send it to Idexx Labs for more accurate analysis. Then I recommend using a monthly dewormer that prevents heartworm, hookworm, and roundworms as well as whipworms if you have them in your area.

Also my dogs have very few fleas,but do get more in the summer,what do you suggest for that also?,and at a good price,just trying to keep the cost down so I don't break the bank,,thank you

If a pup has parvo in its system and you do not no it because it looks to be in perfect health and you give it its first shot what effects will the pup have after this happens ?
I have heard it would kill the pup and some say it will get real sick quick and some say it will help fight off the parvo.
I would like to hear what you have to say on this , Thanks.

From the CDC:
"Although in theory Lyme disease could be spread through blood transfusions other contact with infected blood, there are no known cases of this happening. There is no evidence that Lyme disease is

Anything is possible, but it would be rare.

We vaccinate puppies for Rabies at 4-6 months of age. It really depends on your state and local laws so be sure to check with them.

There are so many good threads covering this subject already. I recommend Ivermectin monthly. You can buy Heartgard Plus which has Pyrantel added for broader spectrum coverage or you can use higher levels of Ivomec 1% at .1cc per 10 pounds of body weight monthly.

Best flea products right now are Nexgard or Bravecto. You might be able to get the larger sizes and split them to save some money. There are 50% rebates available right now on Bravecto so it comes out to about $10 a month. NexGard and Bravecto also take care of ticks. You can use these along with Ivermectin. If ticks are a real problem in your area the Preventic Collars work great for prevention.

You can find cheaper flea and tick products but with added toxicity potential. Diluted permethrin sprays are one. Many are still having good results using the active ingredient in Advantage (imidicloprid) for flea prevention that can be found in many yard sprays. You will have to hunt for them. Advantage does not work on ticks.

I'm not a fan of Seresto Collars. Too many side effects including seizures are being commonly reported. I just think they are too toxic and onset of activity is too slow.

You can use a humidifier or vaporizer or take the pup into the bathroom and let the vapors build up while you are in the shower. These will help to clear mucous. A small amount of liquid honey may help soothe the throat as well. Time and rest is the best doctor and preventing him/her from barking.

Giving a parvo vaccine to an already parvo infected pup could bring it out into the clinical stage, displaying clinical signs of infection. The first parvo vaccine removes the mothers antibiodies from the pup's bodies making them more vulnerable to infection. This is why we always recommend keeping these young pups at home until they have completed their vaccine series. I recommend 4 -5 parvo vaccines spaced out 3 weeks apart starting at weaning and giving the last one at or beyond 16 weeks of age. Diet and deworming is also important in building a pup's immune system to help fight it off.

You're gonna feel like the new vet in a town that hasn't had a vet for years! Lol. It is nice to have input like this on stuff dealing with our hunting dogs. Some of the vets around here act like they're being asked to look at an abused stray when you take a hunting dog in. Thanks for your time and info.

No at the higher dose above it will work for roundworms, hookworms, and whipworms. It will also prevent heartworms. Those are the big ones!
Using a good flea prevention program will prevent most tapeworms.

What happens to puppy 5 in 1 vaccines if they get to room temp (80*) for a period of time. Are they for sure no good or are you taking a chance some are good and some are bad, you just don't know which.
Just got 25 in which I ordered second day air and they had cold packs with them but they sure were not cold.

My burning question is how did you manage coon hunting while in vet school? Coon season has been open here for a while now and this vet school thing is really cutting into my hunting time lol. Certainly school has to take priority during those 4 years but that doesnt make putting the hunting aside any easier.

I have one I will start by giving you some back ground my ntch female was a fine hound on her way to grand 4yrs ago I decided to raise pups in case something happened to her. During pregnancy she developed cyst in on of her tits. After several trips to the vet it was decided it should be removed. During the removal of the cyst her stomach twisted so they had to put her back under and straighten it out. Despite to operations she gave birth to 8 live pups and seemed to b fine in all aspects until her next heat cycle after which time she has stopped hunting completely and I he tried to breed her 3 times since and she will not take. Do you have any idea as to why. I have spent a boat load of money on this dog and my vet can't find anything wrong with her any ideas greatly appricated
