Berton Oney

I just got word of the passing of longtime English Breeder and great man, Berton Oney from Ohio.

Mr. Oney was a true gentleman, a pioneer in our sport and the photos in his stud dog advertisements had a profound impact on my life.

Condolences to all of the Oney's from the Zepp family.

I've been lucky enough to work side by side with Bert for many years training pups, working dogs and hunting. He and his wife Claris treated me like family and have been very good to me and my family. Not many people know how many young hunters he helped out, and made it possible for them to own a nice pup. He was a great story teller, conservationist, father and grandfather, his legacy will long live in the English hounds history. There is a million stories I could tell about Bert, many great times we had hunting and working together. My prayers go out to Claris, Scott, Cliff and everyone else. I am thankful for the time I got to spend working dogs and coonhunting with Bert in Greenwich a few years back. He was a very generous person and always had a good story to tell. I learned a lot about working young dogs, and about the history of our sport from him. Truly a great man and I will miss him.

Obituary for Berton Oney

Obituary for Berton Oney
Berton Oney, age 91, life long resident of Greenwich, passed away on September 17, 2017 at home surrounded by family. He was born April 8, 1926 in Floyd County, Kentucky, the son of Jim and Jane (Shepherd) Oney.

As a young man, Berton worked on the family farm and was employed at Westinghouse and the Akron Standard Mold. His true passion was raising and hunting coon hounds. After winning the World Championship Coon Hunt in West Point Mississippi in 1967 with U.S. Champion, Grand Nite Champion Vanzant’s Sam, Berton became a full time promoter, breeder and hunter of English Coonhounds.

Berton is survived by his wife of 67 years Claris (Whitaker) Oney; daughters, Julia Jane (Mitchel) Hicks of Greenwich, Janet (Joe) Ward of North Fairfield, and Paula (Ed) Fife of Greenwich, along with many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Charles “Randy” Oney; sister, Ella Sutton Hafer and brothers, Willard, Fred, John, Joe, Henry, Charles, and Virgil.

Friends and family may call Friday, September 22, 2017 from 4-8 pm at Eastman Funeral Home, 49 West Main Street, Greenwich. A service will be held at the Coon Hunters Club, 3221 Plymouth East Road, Greenwich on Saturday at 11 am with Pastor Gary Adkins officiating. Burial will follow at Greenwich Greenlawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Heartland Hospice, 907 West State Street, Fremont, Ohio, 43420 or St. Jude Children’s Hospital at www.stjude.org.
