Just a curious thought

I know we have legends in the sport like John Monroe, Lee Logan, and so on and so forth.

But your local clubs you go to around your house do you consider anyone there to be a legend in your opinion

Legend

"Legend" means different things to different folks. I imagine this is the real reason that you are not getting any replies to this post. Jealously is rampant in the coon hunting world, folks tend to not give credit to man or dog. Dave

“Legend” is kind of a tough label to hand out..

That being said, every local club in my area has those 2-3 old timers at every hunt they hold. They’ve been there since the 70’s, and they have the knowledge and stories to back it up!

Those men have seen the clubs and coonhunting at their peak, and most of the time that little local club means more to them than it does to anyone else!

There are several local legends in my memory. Murray Coleman, Ocar Hutchins, Wayne Corn, Larry Trout just to name a few. These man were tough as nails. Today there are several that impress me, Gary Coleman, Joe stokley, John Sapier and many others. All these men go above and beyond. I would camp out so I wouldnt have to drive back home, and some of these would stay at my camp.

Well…………here’s one from a part of the country not particularly known to most who frequent this forum.

Several years ago I was a member of the Northeast Kingdom Coon and Cat Club in Lyndonville, VT. One of the founding members of this club was an old coon and bobcat hunter name Wallace Griggs from Walden, VT.

Wallace or Wally as he was known to most, once told me he owned the 1st UKC Gr Nt Ch female Plott Hound. I believe she was registered as Green Mountain Betty. My guess is the folks from UKC could tell us if that is true or not in about 2 shakes of a dead lambs tail!

Wally wasn’t much more than 5’2” tall but I was told when on snow shoes he could walk most men into the ground! This man was a legend in his time as a cat hunter back in the day when there was a bounty on bobcats here in the Northeast. Wally also had some really good Walkers that were hunted on both cat and coon.

I believe his walkers were out of some of the Sailor dogs that were noteworthy in the 60’s and 70’s.

Ronnie Smith is one that comes to mind when I think of legends in our area. One of the best guys you will ever meet and he will beat you in a cast that you thought you won and you’ll never figure how out he did it!
