The thing we all dread

So out hunting last night and the thing we all dread happened. Coon weren't stiring to much treed one right off. Re- casted in a literal 100 acre section of woods. 2 dogs scattered. My jam dog crossed the gravel road we were parked on where there is only 2 houses on that side of the road. I drove down and got across from her treed a little ways off the road. As soon as I took one step into the woods a guy comes out cussing me up one side down the other. Said he was getting his shotgun and yo get the hell out of there. I tried to be calm and say I was sorry dog crossed the road and I was getting her. He then got even worse yelling and cussing saying he was going to shoot her. These types of things are a nightmare that unfortunately we as hunters are subject to. How would you handle this situation if you had time to plan it out?

Just grab cell phone & make a call, for a little backup. Pull 22 from under seat, while he is get his weapon, & load it while standing on public road. Just in case 'backup' don't get there in time before things esculate any farther. JMO. Take care, Ron.

Planning it out ahead brings a different light on the situation, rather than just reacting. Good question and point your making.

I would tell the individual that I was calling the sheriffs office and make a 911 call. Then I would explain to the dispatcher what has happen and the actions of the landowner, especially if they were threatening to me or my dog. I would ask the dispatcher to speak to the land owner and try and calm him down and either allow me to get my dog or send an officer to accompany me while I got my dog. If the land owner after speaking to the dispatcher takes matters in their own hands. You have documentation that you tried to defuse the situation and resolve the situation peacefully.

If the situation gets defused. And if that is an area that I hunted. I would surly go back in a few days and try to find peace with the land owner.

While many would respond the way you suggested, that could turn out real bad. The earlier responses made sense and would go a long way in a court of law to back the hunter. Your way could get someone killed and cause the situation to escalate past what anyone desires. Calmness and logic should prevail at all times, remember you are trespassing and need the owners permission or the law to back you up. If you use self help, you will not have the legal system backing you up. If you can not come to an agreement with the landowner, please call the law to back you up. Arguing with an irate landowner will never resolve the issue, unless he calms down and that may take help from law enforcement. I would stay in the road without permission from the landowner and wait on the law to get there. Dave

2 hotheads spell nothing but trouble, one hothead is enough! What happens when you either get killed or you kill him? If you pull a gun and he shoots you, then he can claim self defense. You should only pull a gun if he actually tries to harm you and that would be self defense. You are the one that's trespassing, not him. How would you react to someone trespassing on your land in the middle of the night? We sometimes forget, that not everyone coonhunts or understands what we are doing out there at night. It's always best to be humble and apologetic to an irate landowner, most usually calm down when we stay calm, no need to stir the pot with an attitude. Most landowners will not shoot you or your dogs, they are just upset and say things they do not mean. Let them talk all they want, they usually calm down and if they don't, call the law and let the law deal with them. Dave

Had my dog get in mans car port monday night. I drove around to get him and met the man coming down drive way in his underwear and boots. I knew at that point it wasnt goin to be good. I just apologized and agreed that us coon hunters are sorry bunch. And we should feel bad about waking him up EVERY night. I got my hands on my dog. And he kept complaining and I kept agreeing as i walked back to truck. It was about 2 in morning and he wasnt cussing or threatening so I just let him rant. I did think real hard about turning loose by his house just little while ago but I didnt. 10 years ago would have handled situation lot differently.

Here is a key thing lost in the discussion. You and your dog are on the mans property. For me that is a game changer on how I would control myself. The thing about calling 911 right away is you have a witness to his actions. Your not going to come out ahead whooping up on a man on his property. In a wal mart parking lot. I am not calling 911. He wants to be vocal he gets what he deserves. In the middle of the night on his property with him holding the gun. I want witnesses that I mean no harm and want a peaceful resolution to the situation. 911 is the best way to achieve that.

I've stood in a field in the dark with a man that had just killed two dogs waving a gun around, and listened to him scream about his God-given right to protect his property from man or beast. Lots of internet toughs that are gonna bend barrels and burn houses, but when you deal firsthand with a person that's genuinely unhinged that just might shoot you in the face, you'll reevaluate how these situations are handled.
My particular situation occurred on a cast. No guns vs one gun is a pretty lopsided equation. Had someone on the cast been carrying, there's no telling how it would have ended up.
Law enforcement is a good call, and the right call. But I'm here to tell you its a long twenty minutes waiting for the cops to get there when everyone is mad, someone is crazy, there's a gun in the dark and you aren't holding it...

In the particular situation presented, I don't see non violence as an option-The man confronted him unarmed, he tried to calm him down but it didn't work and he said I'm going to go get my gun and shoot you and or your dog. I don't know about everybody else but at that point I feel my only option is to make sure he doesn't make it to that gun! The law can sort it out later.

Tone broke

I tone break my dogs as soon as they cross property lines I tone them in asap. Non issue for me.Most everything I hunt does not check in unless toned or treed.
But what about a night hunt, I have a paid handler,told my wife I'm worth it. The day will come when you can tone a dog in a night hunt for the above reason.

Calling Law Enforcement is probably the most ideal thing to do. However, the fella above that said 20 or 30 mins is a long time to wait is spot on. With a dog treed barking every breath people don't understand we can't just call them off trees, well most can't anyway.

The problem with calling the law is first off you are admitting to trespassing and depending how hard the landowner wants to push things is could spell doom for yourself. Some people there is just no reasoning with and the guy I encountered there was not. I told him I didn't want to be over there just as much as he didn't want me in there. I have never even put shocking collars on my dogs in the 13 years I have been doing this but if this happens with any type of regularity I could definitely see it being very beneficial.
