New coonhunter your guidance appreciated!!!

New coonhunter here. Never been a coon hunter looking into getting a dog. Currently hit the woods w my 3 kiddos. Question for you old timers... why do the walker dogs dominate historically 3-1 most UKC coonhunts? More compete or better on hot tracks? Both? Trying to pick a breed id like to not get a walker since they seem most popular but... I'd like to also have a dog to run squirrels but I'll probably get a separate dog for that.

Walkers fit the scorecard better is all.

To get your feet wet and hunting with kids (guessing young ones who have to get up in the morning for school), get yourself a border collie. They are smart, have a good nose and they will tree both raccoon and squirrels. Also make great family pets.

Now if you only want a "hound" breed, hunt with the hound a few nights before you buy. They can look awful or awful good any given night. Best also if you can hunt with the parents if you're buying a pup. Always remember if you don't know the hound, you better know the man. Don't get "paper" blind, you are hunting "the hound" not their papers. Most of the best hounds I have hunted with came from PR parents and I hunted with some GrNites I was so happy that they didn't eat my feed.

There are nice hounds in all breeds that will do what you want and your family will enjoy for many years. Just be sure to do your homework first.

I have come to realize that the competition hound is like a Nascar "team". If the car (hound) isn't the best in the race, you better have a good driver/crew chief (handler) to make up the difference. As Dale Earnhart said, "The winner ani't the one with the fastest car. It's the one who refuses to lose."

Good luck and I hope the "kiddo's" enjoy this sport for a long time.

DO NOT GET A DOG... (yet). Find a couple people in your area with nice hounds.. and tag along for a season or two.
Houndsmen love to take people along and show off their dogs. You will reap all the benefits of hunting your own dog without any investments and really find out; one, if you like the sport enough to get a hound, and two, will learn much about running hounds to better train and care for a hound when you do get your own.

You will much better enjoy the sport if you have good relationships with people that have good hounds... and that will likely organically become a catalyst for finding the right hound for you and your kids in the future- eliminating the risk of buying hounds from a stranger.

I will say that this is very good advice, you may or may not like coon hunting after you go a few times. You can always get a dog if you find out you enjoy coon hunting. You will learn a lot by going with and hunting with a good dog. Houndsounds approach is spot on. Dave

Good advice. If you get a dog get a trained dog and then bring on a pup.And be ready to spend some money. Not just on a dog but everything else that goes with it.That being said ive hunted dogs over 50 years and dont regret it.I dread the day i cant do it anymore.
