skuna river walkers

I have a young male that is coming on. I am excited about him. He is the most tree minded dog I have ever owned. I don't know much about the skuna river dogs so I am wondering if you have one or hunted with one, what would you say about them? If you have any history on them would you post it? What is their hunting style, voice, temperament, etc?

My male is less than a year and minds real well. He is hard headed and takes a lot to train him, but once he has picked up on something it appears he has got it. He has a loud trail bark. He is beginning to bawl on trail some. He has a hard chop on tree with a shotgun voice. The other night a coon was sitting low and he was double, triple and even quadruple barking.

He has treed a couple while hunting with other dogs, and he has treed several critters on his own...coon, squirrels, possum. I know there is trash, but he has only been hunting a couple of months.

Here is a picture of him. I haven't ever seen one with this much black on him. Is this typical for the skuna river line?

I have a skuna river bark female. the line (at least the Bark line) is most known for tracking and good looks. Most are more tri-colored (more white) than yours, but that all depends on what breeds to what and other factors.

i can say mine is really smart and very well-behaved. not a lot of hard-headedness in her.

This male has Skuna River Bark twice and Skuna River Fred once.

I really like this male. I don't leash him much. He will heel most of the time on command. He is good about coming when commanded. He just turned seven months.

How soon did your dogs start? This one started at 3-4 months. How big is yall's dogs?

I havent hunted with a whole lot of Skuna River Fred dogs but judging by the ones Ive hunted with and other hunters' descriptions of them, I think I would put them in a completely different catagory than the Skuna River dogs that originated in this part of the country. The dogs that best represent the old Skuna River dogs to me would be Skuna River Bark, Skuna River Rudy, Mobley's Timber Talking Rocket, Elon Glasgow's Timber Talkin' Storm, and Mobley's Timber Talkin' Bullet.

4 of the best. most mature acting pups Ive ever seen came from these dogs. As far as dominating competition dogs(I don't mean that's all they were good for, but were coondogs in the making that could purely dominate a cast). Big John Robertson bought a pair of 6mth old female pups off Skuna River Bark & a Moonlight Mike x Spring Creek Chief female named Bell and Sue(Moonlight Mike was a full brother to Homer's Gomer owned by my good friend and Nite Hunt Mentor, Terrell Pennington. Terrell won alot with Mike and to this day he'll tell u Mike was by far the best hound he ever owned. Mike had a dang good mouth on him but was not near as loud as loud as his brother Gomer. What he gave up to Gomer in volume, he made up for in accuracy & BIG, BIG hunting!) Big John gave Chinapa Bottom Bell to my partner Chris Rogers and I and he kept 1/2 of Sue and gave the other half to longtime friend & hunting buddy, Ken Hopper. At 8 months old these, 2 females could flat-out RUN a coon. It didn't get too hot, too cold, too thick, or too stormy for these 2 pups. They were naturally independent, but from the time they were 9 months old, 5-6 nights a week till they were a little over a year old neither pup so much as saw another dog. They could run a coon through cut-over faster than most dogs could run one down the highway. If u put them in a cornfield in July or am acorn flat in the fall/winter they could tree coons as fast as u could unsnap the dog leash. Bell had a coon drowned her in the middle of the Tenn-Tom river and a week later Sue ran a coon out of bad beaver slash and treed it in the edge of the woods behind a man's house. He shot her off the tree and when giving his statement to the deputy, claimed that he killed her because she was trying to get in his rabbit pen. Our wonderful Justice System let him off with not even a slap on the wrist, even after the deputy's investigation reported not even one dog track within 50yds of his rabbit pen. Both had more than their money won to hunt the Fall SS that year. To this day, the loss of those 2 lil females hurts.

Skuna River Drive(Later known as Tri-pod Drive after having an altercation with a speeding car), is still the finest, most polished 10mth old I believe has ever lived. He was owned by Bill Taylor of Brilliant, Al & Josh "Goob" Otts of Sulligent, AL. Drive was from Bark & a Skuna River Lipper daughter owned by Bill. God, could he ever tree them coons! A little trashy but could run a deer right past u like he was tied to it, come across a coon, fall off treed on it, & leave u scratching your head wondering if he wasn't after the coon to begin with. Like a good many Skuna River Lipper-bred dogs, tho, he became ill at the tree and was sold.

Timber Talking Bullet was a fine young hound owned by Buddy Mobley of Aberdeen, Ms. Bullet set these local hunts around here on fire. I spent many nights with his sire, Skuna River Rudy when he was a young dog owned by Kent Moore and Dennis Young. Rudy stayed at the top, or close to it. of the PKC Florida State Race. He was a solid, coon-treeing hound but was a bit aggressive at the tree at times. Bullet's dam was out of Timber Talkin' Rocket also owned by Buddy Mobley. Alot of us then younger hunters owe Buddy and Rocket a great many "Thank You's!" The first time I met Buddy I had just turned 16. I drove to Aberdeen with Goob Otts(who had hunted for Buddy some) looking for a puppy. After listening to Buddy telling a great many stories about the Golden Age of coondogs, he offered me the same deal he did most trustworthy young men. He would give me a puppy if Id take one of his older pups and hunt it for 30 days. See Buddy always kept a great many young dogs on his place. I ended up hunting Lord knows how many dogs for him. Buddy always took care of us kids. If we needed boots, a light, shock collar, tracking units or an entry fee he would be right there with it. Not to mention he kept us in good ole Skuna River blood!

As u can tell, I think very highly of these dogs and the men behind them. Wimp Aron is one of the best gentlmen you will meet anywhere. My mother carried me to his home in Pontotac, Ms to buy my 1st registered pup before i was old enough to drive. Alott of Stud owners & Breeders wouldn't have taken one extra second of their time to fool with a kid. But there Wimp stood, showing all his dogs to a 13-14yr old kid. After I picked a pup when went into his "office" to get his papers. In there was a bookcase filled with what had to be ever Cooner, Bloodlines, & Full Cry ever printed. He related to me the whole story of how the Skuna River line was started. To me, a young, dumb kid, having this coonhunting legend take that kind of time with me was the highlight of my day, week, month, & maybe even my year!

Thanks for that nice story. I enjoyed reading it. THat's the kind of thing that should go in our mags.

I have a Bark female, and have enjoyed her, even though I've only had her a few months. She was out of shape, hadn't been hunted but a couple times in a year. She is great at working a track also, though a little slower and tight mouthed than I like. But, she has worked one quick at times.....I wondered if it was a deer as well. Probably gonna be usually 2nd strike, but showing improvement there.
She is not at all ill, and probably the most well-mannered and best minding dog I've seen in a while. Very smart and a pleasure to own. Not only can she hunt, but makes a good family dog as well.

She is coming in in June and we are planning to breed her to Insane X. I'm looking foward to seeing what the pups with those two lines (X and Bark) can do!

My skuna river female directly outta fred is a track driving machine. She's not quick on the tree she will check check and check again but you know when she trees you will have a coon. When she settles down she's a hard tree dog on some trees she jacks it a little but not much at all some trees she holds the tree looks stright up and rattles em off and doesn't move till you grab her. She is a nitech with one win she has been bred a lot we only bred her once matter of fact tryin to sell one of them now. I love the skuna river line. Each half brother/sister that we've drawn out with has been pound for pound on everything we drew out one of them the two of those dogs blew the other two dogs out the cast within 30 mins and it was pound for pound all night we got beat by 25 points it was 625 and 650. Not a single dog made a mistake.

I am VERY interested in a pup from this female. What are u crossing her own and what kind of dog is she. The first "Coondog" I ever owned was a half sister to this dog. She came from Neil Meyers. I have yet to see a female with the Lipper Joe x Maggie blood in her that didnt produce large litters of treedogs. This was my old female's breeding...

-----------GRNTCH Sackett Jr
----GRNTCH Late Round Slammer
-----------NTCH Wood's White River Gal
Beaver Creek Amy Jo
-----------GRNTCH Scott's Lipper Joe
----Hipboot Jodie
------------Northam's Maggie(Homer's Gomer)

Benny Northam is responsible for the breeding on the bottom side of our female as he bred Northam's Finley River Millie to Lipper 2-3 times and Lipper Joe as well as several others came from that cross. Our females mother has almost exactly the same pedigree as PKC WLD CH Triple Creek Rat and GCH Swamp Rat's mother NTCH PKC SCH Shonuff Mary Jo. Mary Jo was out of Lipper Joe and a different Homer's Gomer(At that time Larry Scott who owned Lipper Joe owned him and his name was Scott's Gomer) female. In our females' pedigrees, Gomer was bred to a Spring Creek Radar-bred female name "Northam's Mandy"

I think of Mr Benny as more than just a hunting buddy, but a mentor and a friend. He is one of the people that showed me what a Coondog was and how to make one.

I got this female from Neil Myers. Know him very well, and his son Greg was my old hunting buddy when we lived in AL. I was his preacher. I talk them them both every few weeks.

We are planning to breed her to Insane X (the $50,000 dog - son of two world champions). The price of the dog isn't what's so important as what the Bark and X lines can bring together. I'm excited about how they will turn out. We had thought of breeding to another X,jr dog I know well, but he isn't titled. Only been pleasure hunted but would easily make Nite and Grand. Either one should make some COONDAWGS.

If interested in a pup, give me a call with your interest and info. and i'll put you on the waiting list. We are taking reservations on pups, but not asking for deposits until we know she has been bred.

She's doing really well now, getting her back in shape.....just in time for her to go in heat. Oh well, we'll probably put her in the hunts after the pups are weaned and she's back in shape. She's looking good right now. Getting less tight mouthed too. She, like the bark line, tracks and trees coons. I've seen her more than once ignore a tree other dogs were on with no coon in it. She isn't a "me too" dog very often.

She is bawl on track and bawl/chop on tree. She has sort of a short bawl locate, but it's not real distinctive. But you can tell when she changes over.

She also hunted close when we first got her a few months ago, but not anymore. She'll go where she needs to. She is smart and well-behaved, and though she hasn't been hunted in a long time before we got her, she is getting back in shape real quick and you can tell she has the stuff.

Either one should make some COONDAWGS.

Are u talking about the old male dog Neil & his son owned out of Xjr? If so, I have heard he was a nice one. If its the one Im think of his mama is out of the original Sackett dog. Benny carried her to be bred to X not long after he won the World Hunt

she's actually getting much better real fast.

We got Lady back in shape, and she has been doing well.

Bred her to Insane X (actually the brother of the $50,000 dog). I like the X,jr. line and the Lipper / S.R. line. Looking forward to this cross.

Only a couple more pup reservations available if anybody interested. The ad is posted at:
