Coon hunting is a dying sport....

They hunted 400 dogs with a $300 entry fee in Salem, Illinois tonight.

That is almost $120,000 in entry fees.

Over 4 nights that is over $400,000 over the 4 nights.

Those 400 hounds were probably worth a Million dollars (one recently sold for $100,000) right in one location.

This kind of money is hard to wrap your head around and people say that Coon hunting is dead. Or some say that $500 is expensive for a pup.

Where else can you take a pup that you bought for $500, raised and trained and go compete and hang out with millionaires? m

446 dogs not 400, the first night it was 394 dogs. Which 446 is a new 1 night record for entries.

Coon hunting

Mr. Lambert, lol. Dying sport only in the eyes of a few doom and gloomers who can not run a successful Club. Maybe they need to look in the mirror, as that's where the problem lies. Numbers do not lie, ALL IS WELL in the coon hound competition World. Dave

I wish I had the patients to fool with puppies. The sport is not dying , the quality of hounds is dying. Some of these hounds that are going for big money really is not worth a crap. Right handler behind it an the right money man is the thing. A man that is good at starting pups will make a killing right now. Especially if it’s out of a blood line that’s winning.

If these hounds are so bad then step right up go win ya 30k... should be an easy task since I'm sure you're packing one 10x's better than the ones winning... You see the scores they have been having this week?! Pretty dang good if you're asking me!

Don’t have the money or time. There is some very stiff competition there this week. Not putting down anyone or any dog. There is a lot of money being passed around on these dogs today. Have seen some that has been bought for real good money that was literally not worth a crap for the money that was spent. Tyler your doing good with what you have going on. It’s not easy to win consistently at the level that is being played right now . All am saying is a man that’s good with young dogs can end up with a fat pocket right now. You can disagree if you want. A lot of the dogs today is the people that’s pushing them that makes them stand out.

What dog and who are the owners of the hound that sold for $100,000. That's got to be a record for the price paid for a coon hound. What breed is it male or female and what bloodline. I really would like to know what makes a hound worth that much.

Wipeout Z a 3 coming 4 year old walker dog. Dustin Weed came with the dog as the handler so they got more than a dog for the deal. They have offered that much for a few more and didn't get them bought.
Heather Island is the kennel that bought him. They have bought
20-30 dogs this year. They are some newcomers that have some money and wanted to make a statement and WIN.

Tyler

Thanks Tylerosu, that really amazes me that someone would spend that much for a hound. Has this dog won any big hunts. What made them offer that much? I know Dustin is a heck of a handler but the hound has to be good too. And whi are the people to turn down that much money for a coon hound. I'm going to keep a eye on this dog. Are they hunting the world hunt this week?

Hearsay is those guys were big horse people that heard about coon hunting at the coffee shop and the money involved and they wanted to win. Weed sold Z in my opinion. The dog is nice and has won quite a little bit. He was in the semi-finals of Spring Junior SS and several pro classics. They definitely have blown the dog selling world up and made us little guys have to train our own to compete...

I wont disagree with you. People like you and I cant go to these kinds of hunts or just buy a hunt (basically). We have to go out, spend out hard earned money and compete. BUT you cant really fault them, Their money they can use it however they would like...

Side note congrats on doubling up Monday night. Id like to see someone like yourself win the world! I unfortunately couldn't be there this week because of work so I live through yall!

Fellas that was my whole point in the early post I made. We have individuals in this today that has unlimited money to spend. That’s fine . God didn’t intend for me to have that kinda money. That’s fine too. He probably knows I would be foolish with the way I spend it. There is some very big hitters playing this game now days. I know Weed. He is a good handler. I know where z came from an hunt with the guys who use to own him. Good people, consider them life long friends . Where am from all the older gentleman have become to old to train what I consider a real coon dog. True houndsmen . A man that knows his stuff an can put the woods time in on a hound can make some money right now. These folks are not bashful about spending money.

I totally agree with you and thank you! I don't fault the dogs but just have much more respect for folks who train and pay for what they hunt! Nothing against anyone with money it just means way more to me doing it with your own dog.

Dogs

I have much respect for those that train and hunt their own dogs, saying that, there are lots of folks like myself that do not have the time or desire to train their own dogs. I enjoy hunting a top coon hound mostly pleasure hunting, have no desire for fame ( winning big HUNTS and do not need the money), I am a pleasure hunter that want the best dogs that I can find to coon hunt with. I do not mind hunting a dog that another man trained if the dog suits me. I coon hunt for a hobby, I have no interest in coon hunting for money. Coon hunting to me is like any sport, I want to enjoy myself and use the best equipment that I can get to do so. If I was coon hunting for money, I would quit today. Dave

Mr Dave your right. A lot of people doesn’t understand the time it takes to make the caliber of dog it takes to win . Even more effort to make a real coon dog. To be honest, I have not the time, the drive to do it right now. Mostly just lazy😂. It’s really a every night thing. When your dealing with people who can buy what they want, what handler they want it’s hard to go against that. My hat is off to the guys that hunt what they raise .
