Hans Wagner was promoting dogs on a bigtime national scale in the 30's. Considering the timeframe and the notoriety of Nightrider and Wagner and the willingness to crossbreed back in the day, I'd bet a pretty penny that a lot of the bigtime Walker studs in these pics have some Nightrider galloping through their veins LOL.

Nightrider was probably the most famous dog of his time frame. Think about it...$1,000...during the Great Depression LOL.

No white or brindle on him...that is just the finish on the photo. Registered B&T...Wagner was famous for moving the breed ahead with a medium eared, faster treehound. He had to have been the most famous coonhound in the land in the 30's & 40's.

cracker was hunted against some of the better dogs and handlers, whitey/doug jackson, jukebox/jr. jackson, mack/myself, hank or style/randy jaccaud, ronnie nickens, sarge & sarge ll/curt sybert, there was just as good dogs and handlers back then. cracker was a straight coondog from from the snap as any. back then there was'nt any of these 20k and 30k hunts, he did it all in open events and some pro hunts.

Merchants Bawlie won the ACHA World Hunt 3 times 1955 1956 and 1957

House's Bawlie might have been as famous also, a World Champ.

I believe that each breed has their select "stand outs" that many other breed fanciers know next to nothing about, and will argue to death over the subject matter. Most of these "famous" hounds are famous because they had either a great promoter, or they were mentioned in a reproducer list in a magazine. Famous promoters/breeders have done their part to improve the breed they fancy and their hounds generally become as famous. Like I said each breed has their own famous breeders like John Wick with the walkers, Hans Wagner with black and tans, Richard McDuffie with leopards, Del Cameron with blueticks, etc.

If you ask a hound hunter who the most "famous" is, one could only in good conscious say Tennessee Lead, but if you ask the person that knows absolutely nothing about hound hunting then there is only one answer, Old Dan and Little Anne.

My two cents

The bluetick breed has Utchmans Hawk,Jet 5,Hammer,S.R. Blue Diamond Jim,Rambo 2,and Sparetime Spanky.Thats just a short list.I think there producing was influenced by the quality of females that was bred to them.Rambo 2 was bred to alot of good females. They did it the right way with him.Hawk was bred to anything in his day and still reproduced like no other.I know I left some good ones out but these are the ones that came to mind.

Mr Rex - Would you happen to have any old info on a fellow that was very influential on the English breed that has not been mentioned....Berton Oney from Greenwich, Oh? I believe (but, not sure..) that he won the World Championship with Vanzant's Sam. I know he had many good studs and females along the way...Whittle's Sandman and Turkey Ridge Racket to name a couple. All three played a major role in the English lines at one point.
