-- Bench training methods? (http://forums.ukcdogs.com/showthread.php?threadid=393076)

Bench training methods?

I would like to here some good training methods for training bench show dogs? My pup does ok for 30-40 sec. Then he won't set still, and he tries to lay down when you hold his tail up or try to place his feet? It is hard to keep your patients with pups sometimes.

Yep just keep working.... paitence is a virtue with pups.

Work as often as possible and make sure to love em up just like you would a pup on a tree... the praise goes a long way and the more you do it the longer they will stand.

depending on their age, you will have to adjust their training time. i start with just putting on the bench and letting them get used to be high off ground. then on bench setting feet in apprx location. then bench, feet, head (thats the hardest). when young and attention span a couple minutes is all I start with. dont worry about tail until later, that usually comes as they get more confidence. sometimes its only front feet and head that is concentrated on! use training treats (smaller bites), praise, etc. as you progress and they dont listen, i dont usually reprimand on the bench when too young as they will associate bench with getting in trouble. I usually just walk away and leave them there (cool off) and come back after 5-10 min and start over. a few min a day until they get older and atttention span is longer, then you'll be able to extend the training time and what you work on. you can also work on one thing one week and another the next, then combine on the 3rd week. you'll find what works for you and yours. good luck.

Short sessions ended on a good note. Stop before you know pup is going to break, and praise. Slowly lengthen sessions. Work on one thing at a time. Too much all at the same time is confusing.

if he is real young and scared use treats! that bench needs to be his best friend and he want to be on it! shorten the time u have as soon as he stands still use a key word and love him up and treat! stop on a good note unless you get frustrated!. good luck rome was not built in a day and neither was a successfull show dog
