No, 18 months old is not too late to start training a hound because hounds are bred to be working dogs, so they have a natural capacity to learn and follow commands.

I have a 2 1/2 year old that has NEVER been in the woods until last week. Third night out she hunted hard by herself while I walked almost a mile to the other two dogs that were treed. She treed twice for a few minutes. No Idea what she treed as she has never seen a coon that I know of. It's never to late if they have not been messed up.
