Get him a hound if you want one that hunts like a hound. They make them!

So where could I find a hound/cur mix or should I just look for a cur

Get on squirrel dog central. PM , Dean, he goes by fiesthunter123. I'd say he could put you on to something.

Anything briar mountain bred will hunt way more than you are gonna want. 2 or 3 coon trees at 500+ yards a night versus 25-30 squirrel trees at 300 + just do the math

I just want something that will get my son fired up

walking 1/2 mile or more to a sq. tree wouldn't fire me up very much.J M O..what you need to do is attend a few sq. hunts & then you can see how &what they do.

Walking a 1/2 mile to a squirrel is a lot better than having to walk a dog over a squirrel.

Not all hounds consistently go that far to get hooked! Maybe you need to hunt with some hounds.

Jt , I'm betting some of the ole dogs you had went 1/2 mile a time or 2 .... And I'm betting you was grinning

Buy a finished dog and a good one at that. Messing with a pup or young dog will probably only frustrate him. If you can find a top pleasure dog to start him off with he will love it
