What would you do?

You are hunting a young dog that seems to be running NOTHING. You cut it loose and it works around the woods barking....seemingly not running anything. It is hunted with other dogs that check him and never make a bark. It isn't running it fast. It isn't catching anything...it doesn't leave the country. It's just like he is hunting out as he should BUT barking most of the time. He will go to other hounds who are running track and join in. Weather he is tracking with them or just going with them barking...WHO KNOWS?

What do you do with it if it were yours?

You have to make the decision but there are too many nice pups to waste much time on one you don't like. From your post I would say you don't like him much.

Hunt him by himself for 3-4 nights to see if he does this without the pressure of another dog being in the woods with him. Then drop him by himself on a coon that crosses the road just to see what he will do with a red hot track.

If he trees that red hot track, then you know he will tree a coon if it is hot enough. If he doesn't tree that red hot track but goes back to barking hear then there like he does when dropping him with another dog, he may just be working tracks that he is not yet capable of treeing.

Squirrels are on the ground big time this time of year, tracks are everywhere. A possibility? 2 am may give a clue

Is it closely related to big D? Lol. He won thousands in plc but when he was a young dog I followed him hundreds of drops and watched him do the same thing. Keep ahold of this pup and if he ends up with the meat at the end you might have a future world champ.

Im going to assume this dog is high strung, barks in the kennel, paces, ect. If so ive seen a few like that and there's only two ways to handle it. Let it get older an hope it mellows out a lil bit or just cut your losses. Personally I don't want to reproduce pups that are a pain in my butt for the first 2 years of their life before I really start putting them to work anyway.

I've got a black and tan male here at the house that is almost a year old that this describes to a T!

I'd take it out in the middle of the day to be sure what it's doing and teach it to shut its mouth
