G-Man pup hooked

7mth old pup (G-Man x Daisy) struck in with the old dog ran track and stayed treed for 15 or 20 min till we got there. They had 3 coon in the tree. Maxx has only been to the woods at night 3 or 4 times and has seen 2 caged coons. I like what Im seeing so far.

Took Maxx by his self Christmas night just to let him run. He ran for a little bit and then struck a track and got parked under a coon.

I think he turned 8 months old yesterday. Since I started this once a week routine he's treed a coon every time I have taken him.

Posted by BLAKE WHEELER on 01-12-2017 04:25 PM:

Not alone but he stayed treed for probably 30 min and they had the meat. He's on the left my female is on the right. First drop he went 954 with my female but never hit anything, second drop went 550 and treed with the meat

Posted by Southern Coondog on 01-12-2017 09:24 PM:

He was clicking it off to. Sounded good in that holler.

Blake's pup is very impressive. He split from his older female last night and both had a coon. We knocked his out and he didn't back down. Very impressed. In 3 or 4 months he's going to be hard to beat. All he needs is a lil barnyard in him.

Posted by BLAKE WHEELER on 01-18-2017 03:49 PM:

I appreciate it Jake. The worst thing about him doing this good at a young age is I cant hunt him every night. I sure am ready to be able to start hunting him 6 or 7 nights a week and see what he can really do.

Posted by Hoosier Outlaw on 01-20-2017 06:29 PM:

You got a nice pup there Blake. You are smart not to push him too hard at that age...very smart. You won't ruin one by being careful...but you can absolutely ruin one by over hunting them before they are physically and mentally able to handle hard night after night hunting....and you never realize it till the damage has been done. It's like taking a young child hunting when they are under ten years old....one really bad night can make them never want to go again. Be careful with him and you will eventually get out of him everything that was bred into him. Naturals like him are not all that common...but one still has to show patience and restraint while they go through their development stages. If he starts to back slide a little...lay him up a week and let him forget it and revert back to what is already burned into his memory through repetition. Never try to hunt an under 2 year old dog through a potentially serious problem...because if they are allowed to repeat that bad behavior even as few as 4-6 times over a short period of time without sufficient correction to stop it....then they are committing that behavior to memory through repetition and it will become a habit that will be hard if not impossible to break them from later.
All young dogs, just like children will test their boundaries....it's your job as a parent and a trainer to stand there ready and waiting with the appropriate amount of correction at the ready. Just like time out is used with great success with a problem child....so to can it be used with great success with a problem young dog....never be afraid to lay a young dog up for a week or two if they start doing things...bad things they have not done much of up to that point. Don't let them do it till it becomes a habit unless it's something you want to be a habit.
Good luck with him...I really enjoy your updates on here and facebook....luv to watch a good one take shape!

I appreciate the tips and info Shane(I need all I can get), that's the hardest thing is to leave him sitting in the pen when I load up my other dog every night but I have to keep telling my self that he is still a goofy acting puppy. I cant take any credit for his ability that goes back to the men and women who had a hand in his breeding, all I have tried to do is set him up for success every time I take him to the woods. If the coons don't seem to be moving or its a bad night or we are hunting public land where he has to go along way to hit a track I leave him at the house. I figure the quicker he can get on a coon track the less chance he has of getting bored or start running trash. One thing I can promise anyone I get a pup from is they will get there fair chance to make a coon dog, I will put them in the best situations I can to bring out their potential. Maybe one day I can venture up your way a go for a hunt.

Posted by Hoosier Outlaw on 01-20-2017 08:43 PM:

Sounds like your doing everything right.
Keep his hunts short, exciting and fun for him and always put him up while he is still wanting to hunt more. Try to keep him on easy coon as much as you can until he is 12-14 months old or is showing you he wants to hunt deep enough to find one on state ground or where they are thin. Repetition is the key. A dozen short easy coon tracks and trees can flip the switch on most pups and cause that to become an ingrained habit with them that will be the base of everything they learn from then on. After they are mature enough both mentally and physically...then you can let them try their hand at treeing the hard tough long running coons on bad nights. Just like with kids...you can never let them get bored for too long when doing something or they may lose that passion and drive and some never seem to get it back. Keep up the good work!

Keep hunting him with me and Red and he will get to getting deeper lol. This is a impressive pup, split trees with a coon. When he gets out of the puppy stage and matures he will be in the winners circle. I haven't been hunting red bones long, but I've been hunting coon dogs, beagles and Squirrel dogs all my life and no what a nice pup and dog is. I've trained a lot of dogs and naturals that just need hunting dont come along often and he is what I call a natural.

Mark where is that natural loud mouth G-Man pup of yours? His littermate brother has been treeing those Illinois coon this week. He's 3/3 in the last 2 nights. Love those big mouths on these dogs.
