Purina Dog Chow

A lot of people feed their dogs Dog Chow and are super happy with it. The protein, fat, and ingredients aren’t exceptional compared to other feeds and would be considered in other brands to be a junk feed. My question is why does Dog Chow do a good job keeping dogs looking good when other comparable feeds don’t do as well or are considered junk feed?

because protein and fat percentages on bag are minimums

John

Just like one of my friends, a vet Said " dogs don't need all that high protein, it's hard on their liver unless you are hunting them hard". Dog food companies exploit us humans into thinking we have to spend big dollars on dog food or it is junk. I remember folks in these mountains feeding their dogs plain corn bread years ago before commercial dog feed was available. Commercial dog feed came about after the War, pet food is a multi billion dollar industry these days. Purina has been one if the leading dog food makers for many years and spend a lot if money on research. They even cater to those of us with the "need" to feed "premium" feed to our dogs ( pro plan ). I feed both dog chow and pro plan mixed, should just use dog chow. Dave

I agree with Dave ,how many times have you tried a dog feed because it looks good on the bag , and 2 or 3 weeks into it your hounds didn't look good, what it reads like and what it feeds like are often not the same,........

Don't know, but dog chow naturals beef and chicken formula is only 25/12 and my dogs seem to thrive very well on it and they love the taste. Have no plans of switching

X2 my dogs are doing good on the chicken naturals.

Purina

I have fed alotta different kinds and ultimately once Purina decided to make the Green bag feed a competive price on the shelf, i have settled back with it as being the best feed available for the common mans budget.
In the winter just buy a 40 lb bag of 30/20 powdered milk replacer and "dust" the food w it up up the fat/ energy.
This makes the dogs coats shiney and they consume more water to boot.

Two different times I've seen dogs at hunts that looked super fit and healthy and I asked the owners what they were feeding and they said Dog Chow. I know one of the guys, Bill Wooten, hunts dogs harder than just about anyone and the dog looked outstanding. I had a female brought to my house to breed to one of my males and he left her along with dog food that was not in a dog food bag so I didn't now what brand it was. The female looked great and she only had one small pile of poop every day. I asked the guy what feed that was and he said Dog Chow. I've just always struggled to try feeding Dog Chow because of the double corn in the first three ingredients and it being higher priced than feed with similar ingredients. It just doesn't make sense to me why Dog Chow does good when I have in the past fed similar dog food ingredient's wise and always had to go back to something better.
Years ago I fed Diamond High Energy, before they changed the formula, and had good results with it, look wise and stool wise, but it was 24 20. I've decided to give the Dog Chow a whirl and just started by mixing some in with what I've been feeding so I'll see how it goes.

Over the years i have fed some of every kind of feed. I used black gold for years until it disappeared around here. I now feed Purina Pro and yes it more expensive but considering how my hounds look the amount i feed and the amount of poop that i have to clean up will make me stick with Purina. Not saying its bounds better than the others it just suits me.

A vet told me MANY years ago that a dog only needed 9% protein and I don't remember the fat but it was somewhere between 12 and 15%, IF ALL OF IT WAS AVAILABLE FOR THE DOG TO DIGEST! He said that you could meet the feed specifications with charcoal, chicken feathers and rubber. Digestible is the real key to the food.

We only go up on protien during the winter months. I still cut it with PP Sport then.

Taking time to worm your dogs on a regular routine will help keep your dogs looking good too. Many people do not worm enough. If I did "before and after" pictures of hounds we get back or hounds we buy from the internet vets on Facebook, no one would believe where they come from.

That makes sense. I've been around long enough to remember feeding dog food made at the feed mill and it worked as long as you fed enough of it. I'm not hunting as much anymore so I just want the dogs to look good and not have to clean up piles of poop every day as I have my dogs inside a barn on concrete.

I fed Dog Chow for many years. You could get it anywhere and it was reasonably priced. Dogs loved it and performed well, (both hounds and birddogs). Didn’t really pay much attention to it since I am not a breeder, but females that I had and hunted did not come in heat consistently. Had a female a couple years ago that was doing really well so I decided to get her bred at her next heat cycle. Had expected date marked on the calendar that came and went. She was 3 or 4 months late so I started doing some research and found articles that claimed that dog food with too low protein content could affect heat cycles. I switched to a different brand with higher protein content and the female came in about a week later. Have been paying attention since and my other females seem consistent now. Maybe it was just a coincidence, but I am staying with a little higher protein content for the time being.

Might be another reason for me to continue to feed Dog Chow so I'm not tempted to breed a potlicker in the future. lol.

So if Purina is still using the same type of ingredients as other dog food, corn & chicken etc, why do you think their feed is more digestible than other feeds with similar ingredients?

I think quality control plays in to this ,I also feed purina you ever notice every bag looks and smells the same?may use same type ingredients but not the same quality...

Cotton1927

I agree with you, a list of ingredients does not indicate the quality of the ingredients. Purina uses quality ingredients and has their own research facilities. Dave

Dog feed

This is only my thought on high end dog feeds verses low end or those in between. If a guys hound doesn’t win a hunt , he can always blame it on there dog feed!
Lots of guy want to have the best tracking system , best dog box and feed the most expensive dog feed!
That goes with deer hunting or bass fishing .
This think what the coon hunters fed there dogs 40 years ago?

How much do coyotes pay for their feed? And they can catch a rabbit.

After a little over a month of feeding Dog Chow I don’t have any complaints at all. I’ve used discounts at Rural King and Tractor Supply and I’ve saved quite a bit of money to boot. I also joined the Pro Club which will also save quite a bit in the long run. So far weight is maintaining and a little less cleanup. I’m
sure I’ll have to feed extra or mix in higher protein if it gets super cold but that is to be expected. Overall though it’s going to be hard to beat for the money.

Little story

A man was asked if it was okay to go hunting on his land, one of those asking had a leash made out of a piece of rope, his pant legs were wore out to the tops of his boots and his boots looked like they were wore plum out, the other 2 hunters had nice clothes, new looking boots and fancy leather leads. The land owner said jokingly that the 2 dressed nicely could hunt, they were not going to hurt the game population, but the other guy was just too much of a real hunter by the way he looked and he better not let him hunt. I was always wary of the man who actually looked like a real hunter than the guys with all the nice new clothes and hunting gear, a piece of rope for a lead, a beat up dog box, wore out boots and pants, but packing a coon dog. Lol. Some folks forget that the most important thing a coon hunter can have and that's a COON DOG. Fancy equipment is nice to have, but equipment does not tree coons, nor does dog feed. Dave

No harder than I hunt now it wouldn’t make mine any better if I was feeding the best feed ever made. Lol. I just need them healthy, not breaking the bank to do it, and not having tons of poop to clean up. Looks to me like Dog Chow meets those requirements.

Lol. That little story was not meant towards you in anyway, it's for all those folks thinking that the best feed ( cost wise) and all of the other perks, dog box, etc. Makes them a better hunter or better dog, it does not. I have fed Purina for many years at times to a real coon dog, mostly to a average coon dog and all my dogs have done and looked good eating Purina feed. Dave
