AS FAR AS I KNOW THERE IS NO LIMIT ON COON. YOU WILL HAVE TO CHECK WITH THE POSSUM COPS ON WHAT FIREARM YOU ARE ALLOWED TO CARRY. NOT ALL PUBLIC LAND IS OPEN FOR COON HUNTING.

Southern il hunting

Shawnee national forest in my opinion wouldn't be the best, but I've never coo hunted there. Shawnee has big patches of open hardwoods and pine groves. If you could hunt the edges along some of the private property that would be the best.

You have to get a permit to put in your truck its free just got to go to dnr website to public hunting section. you have to already have a Il hunting license to get 1. They use hunting license # for ID for truckn permit. Best thing to do is find out what region your hunting and call there office. We hunt the Carlyle lake ground alot after duck seasons out. Its good hunting just got to be aware of other idiots out there, trappers, shiners etc. Goodluck hope this helps.

Illinois coonhunting

I prefer to hunt around more farmland. The Shawnee is mostly forest surrounded by pasture land. If you are going to hunt the Shawnee hunt the creeks for sure. Some areas have large rock formations and bluffs. Johnson county would be my choice for coon hunting because the land is more rolling and not so many bluffs. Dutchmans lake is in Johnson county and I think there is a good chunk of public hunting there. Hope this helps some.
