i went out early and treed one layup. dog went through two woodlots and never made a peep other than the one tree. must of moved a little later
Hunted Sun, Mon and tues after gun season, lay ups but coon sitting out to be treed Sun. Mon short tracks mostly to dens, seen coon on most of them , one good race across a cut corn field that hasen't been tilled under, slammed him on the edge of the woods. Tue they were moving good but foggy, couldn't even see the trees at first, did manage to see two of the coon. Then hunted Sat all pretty fast short tracks, had a slick, two dens and 3 coon. Two were on dens one on the edge of a field. They are in rut now it seems. I'm just hunting 2 hrs each night right now and early. I don't knock out many so I couldn't tell you if they were bores or not. Wish I could have hunted the last two nights but dog is a little gimpy right now, don't know what he did.
Started out good again last night, treed 2 and an honest den the the wheels feel off. Got into some tricky rutting coon and things got ugly. That and i've dogged this woods hard for 2 yrs now I might have thought them old coon a trick or two LOL. Moon sure was bright, seems to be bright a lot these days.
It was a ruff week made a lot of dens, and several slicks. One night we made 7 dens in 2 hours some were honest some were slick. Finally saw a few coon Sat night on the outside. It was nice to run some good long tracks and see the reward at the end.
Treed more coon last night, long tracks coon on the outside of dens. Still in rut I guess. Heading to State land tonight finally got a lot of rain and the state land is standing in water. Can't wait to see how it goes.
Raccoons breed in Ohio end of January deep into February now boars are swelling up , raccoons have the same gestation of dogs , 60 to 63 days ! That is the peak time ! Never any slow nights when they are full blown breeding !

Went last night 18 degrees with 10/15 mph wind in NW Ohio. 3 good tracks from 100 to 500 yards long all ending on dens with coons tapping a few trees first. I believe next week it will really pick up with the breeding and getting a few more on the outside. January breeding is my favorite time of year to hunt. good luck and be safe everyone.
Scott, not sure what part of OH you are from but here in North Central, Crawford, Marion, Seneca, Huron and Harding Rut is pretty much over late Jan. Its just your yearlings that might come in late. 25 yrs ago I use to get laid off in the winter and had to make that up selling fur, so I took a lot of coon back then. Depending on the year the week after Christmas was the cut off date for taking good clean hides. After that they were rubbed bad and scratched to beat all. Which really stinks because as far as being prime ( thick heavy fur) they were just getting there but were junk hides do to the rubs and hair pull. OSU did some good research on Coon movement, using GPS collars and were able to confirm that some sows are have 2 litters, and that young sows pretty much can come in heat anytime of the year. I highly recommend everyone to watch the PBS show they aired on it if you can find it.
Check the Odnr website , they’ll tell you when the majority of breeding is done ! Can’t have kittens being born in Feb and January , mama had to have liquid water to feed them , all animal cycles are based off hours of light and dark in the 24 hour cycles, that’s why deer breed in Ohio in November , so their young are born in the spring ! Coons are not breeding much now , that’s a fact , you can be anywhere in Ohio in 3 hours , few hours isn’t going to be much different ! If they are breeding you can hit a good one in the daylight ! Just the facts bud! Will be getting hot soon? Never struggle to get after anything when they are breeding hot and heavy! Click this link. https://ohiodnr.gov/discover-and-le...mammals/raccoon

I take what DNR says with a grain of salt, are they still claiming we don't have Bobcat in the state of OH LOL? I hunt all year I go by what I see myself in the woods, not what old wise tales claimed. Look at Deer hunting. Now that people are handing over money left and right to do it. There is a lot of research now proving the old timer myths wrong. Plus all the trail cams. I had an albino pet coon born in the 1st week of Feb. I got him because he lost a foot to frost bite, had him for many years. I have had dogs pull kitten coon out of Dens in the 1st week of Nov. before, dog got 3 before I got into the tree and saw what was going on. This past spring I found 3 litters in the 1st week of march. I know at least 2 of the litters made it, because I kept treeing them all year. ( and no I don't take many coon at all now). We had a Doe have a fawn this year on Sept 1st. Pretty sure it didn't make it, I never saw it after the 1st two weeks. I was really suprized how healthy the coon were this winter with the swamps being dried up, but I have yet to see a sick one.
Ok buddy , don’t let facts get in the way of opinions , they know there are bobcats in Ohio ! There are anomaly’s in everything thing , bucks are ready to breed as soon as there antlers harden , there are does bred as early as September , it’s rare! Raccoon males are ready to breed when testosterone rises , some females have irregular cycles , but the majority is done later this month through February, you hearing many fighting and squalling , you will in the next few weeks ! It’s really basic biology!

That was my point with the Bobcats, ODNR claimed they were not here for many, many years. I kinda know how the biology works, a close family friend made a living breeding coon, fox, skunk bobcat, and yotes among other things. He owned the 1st Buckeye Chuck as a matter of fact, FYI Chuck was a female LOL. We should just meet up at Killdeer plains last week of Jan and go for a hunt, its 50 south west of me, but I go there a few times a month while it's open. It does get dogged hard, and seemed a little crowded this year. But you can pretty much have the place to yourself in Jan and Feb.
I hunted Killdeer with Chucky ADKINS mid February last year , we treed 9 open coon , one den , one slick , mine was 13 months old , she treed 3 , the den and the slick , Chuckys treed the other 6 , in some icy water!

Went last night , cold and snowy. treed a double on a long track, a den, and one section didnt get a bark. dont think they are hot and heavy breeding yet.
I hunt with Chucky at killdeer at least once a month. Chucky was hunting Cass last winter. Cass pretty much just falls treed, as soon as she opens. At that time she made a lot of trees. He would pull old Ma out every now and again. She would open on tracks.
He was hunting a young male last year

Meeting up with Chuckie this week in fact.
Hunted Saturday night left out after 10, made 2 dens and treed boar on the outside, that snow was crunchy and loud walking. Surprised dogs feet didn't get little sore

I was on the phone trouble shooting Chuckie's Garmin last night, he saw several coon on the way to killdeer last night. I would say they will be stirring most of the week with this warm front. I'm heading over that way wed, night. Might head to the muck tonight.
Call8ng 20-30 mph winds tonight with gust over 40, doubt I'm going tonight
