Looking...

VERY interested in buying a REALLY nice hound 5 years old or less. Male or female, doesn't matter.

Must have:

LOTS of hunt and hustle...no return after casting
if he or she checks back in and you like that, that is your preference...if they come check back in, I don't want them

GOOD bawl mouth on track and steady tree dog

NOT a barking idiot on the ground

NOT a packer and backer

would RATHER be alone

NOT ill but will stay treed

hunts just as hard alone as with company

VERY accurate

NOT junky, unless we are talking about a wild young dog under 16 months old that needs molding

would RATHER them not be big enough to saddle and ride...I don't like a huge hound...just a preference...

I'm hard to please. I know this. I will be more than glad to pay a fair price for something that suites me. I know what I'm looking for isn't cheap. I have had some bad luck with hounds in the past year. Lost a couple and had a couple of failed breeding attempts. I do own a couple of pretty nice hounds, but I am looking for something young to hammer on this fall and winter.

You would think with all that you read on here about the super nice dogs and how they reproduce that finding a good one would be relatively easy.

Posted by Treedoggmafia on 09-01-2015 06:16 PM:

Crazy how that works! Pretty sad there's no dogs in the breed that have the qualitys your after!

Posted by hat creek mac on 09-01-2015 06:23 PM:

There are still a few....just not as common as they once were. I know what I'm looking for is tied out behind someone's barn just waiting to be discovered!

Posted by Vic Stoll on 09-01-2015 08:01 PM:

I wish you the best of luck in your search Ritchie!

It's not too easy to get all of that list wrapped up in one hide. I know you have been looking for quite some time now.

I don't get out too much, but from what I have seen, what you are looking for doesn't come in bunches in any breed, especially the blue haired ones

I have what I described here in my kennel

she is 7 years old (soon to be 8) and a stomp down coon dog
she will speak for herself
turn her loose with dogs trailing or treed nearby and she will fire hard the way you send her and tree her own

I am looking for a nice younger dog

I am not obsessed with running to a competition hunt like I once was. I just enjoy hunting the right kind mostly alone and from time to time with friends. The dog, if good enough, will also be hauled to some of the bigger money hunts.

coondogs

I bought several hounds that were suppose to be coondogs. I learned quick that what you and me like are few and far between. I got lucky and found a couple of them Rambo bred turds that like to tree coons and suit me well. Goodluck on finding yourself a nice coondog. Derek

I tried to track down that male out of Magic and Rose but didn't have any luck. Hopefully he will show up in some hunts soon.

Posted by hat creek mac on 09-04-2015 06:53 PM:

Let me clear up a few things for some folks.

I haven't quit hunting. I also haven't stopped raising a litter of pups occasionally. I HAVE gotten to the point that I really don't enjoy starting pups anymore. I like finishing the right kind and do know how to get one ready to go win a competition hunt. I do still own a 3 acre puppy pen and if I raise a pup, he or she will run loose in it until they are ready to hunt. The last litter I raised, I sold them all with hopes of buying one of them back at a later date. Everyone I have talked to really likes their pup. Maybe that wasn't a good idea...

Lots of the dogs described on here are really not as good as their owners would like for us to believe they are. MOST of them don't hunt hard enough for me and are not independent enough for me. That doesn't mean there is anything wrong with them, they just wouldn't suite me. The measure of ones greatness is mostly in the eyes of the one dumping feed in their pans daily. What everyone else thinks doesn't really matter!

I do own a really nice dog. She is not for sale. I am looking for another one that is VERY similar to her.

I have never claimed to be a breeder, although I have bred 2 that made the final four of a world hunt. If me buying a dog that I like instead of raising one from a pup makes me any less a breeder, then so be it. That is a status I have never tried to claim. I am just a coonhunter. Nothing more.

I've got one like you described that goes back to your dogs ( Little Bit, Phydeau). I enjoy hunting her and her offspring. I've got a male that's just like her. The females I've kept aren't like her but are nice dogs just a different style of dog. I really enjoy this type of hound. The independence can make it frustrating at times but when they put it all together whoohee it's nice. Good luck in finding your next hound and thanks for breeding such nice hounds. Brian Davis

hmm good luck finding one, I might know where one is this time next year. Sounds like Eddie might be interested in breeding your female to Crockett. Eddie and Crockett have been doing a lot of winning here recently
