Needs hunted/tuned back up

Seems like i see this more and more in ads. I don't hunt off season hardly at all and I can take my dogs out and tree coon with them.why do these dogs need to be tuned/hunted back up .

Lol, it's just another way to say they are not fully trained. I also, never summer hunted in recent years and my dogs treed coons just as ever, only out of physical shape not ability. Dave

Exactly mine might be out of shape but will still tree coon. If they didn't I wouldn't own them.

Hunt

Exactly, I feel the same way. Mine do not get hunted from the 10th of March until the following Fall months and other than getting fat and lazy they still tree coons. I used to hunt all year around in my younger days and that was mostly to satisfy me, NOT the dogs. I have stood dogs up as young as 2 years and never seen any real setback. Dave

Hunting

Several years ago I purchased a young dog coming 2 years old at the end of hunting season. I did not hunt her until Oct 15 or 7 months later. My friends wanted to hunt opening night and we did just that. I owned a couple of top coon dogs and when we met up to go hunting that night everyone wanted to know what dog I was hunting that night. I told them I had my young female and that said I thought you were bringing a coon dog. I replied lets just see and my young dog put on a coon treeing clinic that night. My buddies were dumb founded, I just laughed. Mind you this dog was under 2 years old and had not been hunted in 7 months. Seeing this is enough for anyone to know that laying a dog up does NOT effect their coon treeing ability at all. The ability is there or it is not there, hunting simply gets them in physical condition, it definitely does not give them ability. As Reuben one of the posters on this web site states ability is something they are born with, NOT something you can train or get by hunting. Now hunting just lets them express their ability and stay in shape. You can not make a silk purse out of a sows ear. Lol. Dave

Lol. Agreed. I just wanted to express my 2 cents on the just needs hunted up comments on dog ads. Ability is something one is born with animal or human. No
amount of training will work without the ability. The reason we see so many mediocre dogs is the lack of natural ability to begin with. The great ones are born with the it factor and make doing it look easy. No amount of hunting can replace natural ability. The same goes with humans as with animals you have to have the natural ability or talent to excel, education or training is great, but can not replace ability. Dave

I don't disagree with what has been said but there is a learning curve for a dog and usually the one who gets the experience and exposure will be able to perform at a higher level. For example two men with exactly the same physical talent to play basketball but one plays once a month and the other 5 times a week. Which would you think would be better at the game? Now I realize that Michael Jordan could not play for 3 years and still beat a lot of good basketball players but even then he has had a lot of experience. I know that my current dog has grown a lot in the last year. The question is would he have made the same progress hunted half as much.

Don't get me wrong, My comments was concerning needs hunted up. I fully agree that a dog would be in better physical condition and be able to hunt at a faster pace if they hunted regularly. I also, agree that a dog will get better with more experience or hunting. What I am saying is a dog will never exceed their ability no matter how much they are hunted. Making excuses for a dog by saying it needs hunted up is just that a excuse for poor ability. We are not talking about pups or dogs that have not been hunted or given the proper chance. The really talented dogs do not need to be hunted up to look good. Dogs that have to be hunted all the time to tree coons are culls in my opinion. To use your analogy of basketball player no amount of practice or playing will make a average player be as good as a Michael Jordan, it's about natural talent or ability not playing time or hunting time. Dave I agree that being laid up should not make a dog back up. A coon dog should be able to go tree coon if only hunted 4 times a year but when I have a young dog, as I always seem to do, I hunt thru the summer just to get him as far along as I can. But yes I smile when I see "needs to be hunted up" and just figure the dog has never done much but they're hoping some day he will.

Tom, I agree 100 percent, a young dog regardless of ability definitely needs the hunting experience to achieve their best. It's these older dogs that just needs hunted up that gets my goat. I agree that there are way too many dogs that have to be hunted hard just to achieve mediocre results in my book. I do not have time for mediocrity in dogs, horses or anything I use in my daily life. It is just as cheap to feed the good ones as it is with the average ones. Dave
