Hunting down south YES. Up north I would say it's 50/50. A dog should be better in the conditions its hunted in the most.

Less coons in the south, gotta be a reason for it.
this thread may start a coonhound war!!! lol I think they're all just as good as they can be. But you switch they're hunting conditions and the southern dogs are probably will outlast the northern ones. Bring the yankee dog down to the swamps in mid july, may be a little bit too humid for em.
Hobo ,GO TO BED!!!Take a brake LOL LOL

Ive got a dog that thinks hes southern,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,does that count?
Stir That Pot Hobo
LOL.
The old "coondog civil war" thread rears it's ugly head yet again.
The reason their aren't no coons in the south is that even the lowly raccoon knows it's an armpit of a place to live and the food sucks. lol
Bring those awesome southern cooners up right now. I'd love to watch them refuse to come out of the dog box cause a balmy -40 degrees is too cold.
Works both ways fellas. Lets get it on.

Hey Craig
How about filling in the blanks!! This old northern coonhunter ain't got a **** idea what you're trying to say. Maybe if DOT was sitting beside me again, she could tell me what heck you just said!!!! I think you hunters down south got way too many snakes, 'gators and swamp water to have a big coon population. Come on up north in mid to late summer and see what TOO many coon will do to your dogs brain. Take care, Ron.
Well - it depends on what you consider a 'COODOG' -- different dogs get use to hunting different terrain and a Northern dog may be better at tracking through open fields and hedge rows but coming here to SC where we have miles and miles of swamp and briars, the dogs who haven't been use to it in my opinion 'don't have the heart' to get in the bushes and get it done. Hell Hole Swamp has crushed many hopes and dreams of northerners at the Grand American. Or how about in Ridgeland where a dog comes nose to nose with a possum on the half-shell and doesn't know what to make of it?
NOT saying however that dogs who travel the country and get acclimated to the different hunting areas can't do it.
If you want a COONDOG - or to know who's got one, look at the dogs who are winning and WHERE they are winning. If they go all over and do well, then its a good gamble they are solid.

We have briars up here too. As far as Hell Hole Swamp it came down to the last tree last year at the Grand American. Take it for what it is worth.
