Show people

From time to time I see and hear a lot of people making digs at people who show their hounds and saying the show people are ruining the coonhound world. What those people don't realize is the amount of work that goes into those show dogs. Show people put just as much work into their show dogs as the people who are into hunting. It takes a lot of work to condition these dogs in addition to the money spent on good food and supplements to keep their coats nice and shiny. There is also the money and the miles put into a show dog. There is the time that is put into them on the bench.

So far today I have run 5 dogs on the kubota, cut nails on 4 dogs, bathed 3 beagles, put 5 dogs on the bench, took 2 dogs to the pond to swim, and put three of them pulling a wagon with weight in it to build up their muscles.

In addition to that every one of these show dogs goes to the woods and gets a chance to hunt. We don't do the night hunts but we do a lot of pleasure hunting. From everything that I have seen about the night hunts I don't know if that is something we will ever get into or not.

Most of the people that I know that show also hunt their dogs.

I see from your signature that you have B&Ts one of the 2 breeds along with Redbones that have suffered the most from people breeding for appearance as a priority instead of performance.
There are many other examples in the dog world of a working breed of dog loseing its ability to do what it was bred for because the show dog people neglected ability in their breeding programs.
I have no problem with people that show their hunting dogs as long as they hunt their show dogs, but MOST of the top show dogs never get those cute itty bitty feet muddy in the woods.JMO.

hunt or not

I like the way the beagle hunts go. YOU DONT SHOW UNLESS THEY HUNT MAKES FOR A BETTER BREED FOR DOING WHAT THEY ARE SUPPOSE TO DO. But the show dogs are also good for keeping the specs in line on our hounds i just wish they were all to hunt first. (JUST SAYING ) But who am i in the dog world

I'm sure show dog people do put time and effort into their hounds. But it is a lot harder to keep a hunting hound at its peak rather than a show dog. Breed standards and conformation are very important, not as much as ability. Ability and conformation should go hand in hand. That's why you should have to hunt what you show and show what you hunt.

show ppl

I'm very much anti show dogs. I'm sure ppl put a lot of effort into their show dogs. But they are first and formost working dogs. By that I mean hunting dogs. Most ppl I know only show there hounds. They might talk like they will hunt some even might take a dog to the woods. But its obvious that they don't really want to hunt. Pleasure hunting or comp hunting, it doesn't matter to me. I just firmly believe a coonhound should be hunted before anything else. I hunt redbones and the amount of show dogs is very high! And it does nothing to help the breed in my opinion. Of course everyone thinks different and this just happens to be the way I think.

I always raise my own pups so I usually decide which one i want to keep by the time there 8 weeks old.I cant tell how good looking of a dog there going to be.Ill show them if there the right type if there not the right type to show but they are good in the woods they have a home here.Ill never have a dog that is just for showing, there not worth the feed.I enjoy showing them but I really enjoy hunting them.

I wouldn't say that at all about Black and Tans. They win their share just as much as any other breed by percentage. There's just as many "coondogs" that are black and tan by percentage as the other breeds, just like they have the same amount of culls by percentage as other breeds.

I can't speak for the redbones and plotts because I haven't hunted with many of them but I can speak for the black and tans because I have hunted with tons of them and I have ran the statistics on them and I know that dog for dog the percent chance of a black dog being a coondog is just as high as any of the rest of them (meaning out of 100 black dogs 10-20% would be good just like it is for Walkers, English and the others per 100 dogs).

Why dont you check out the AKC. black and tans, those are the ones that have been bred as show dogs pretty much exclusivly and chechout how many of them can tree a coon or have ever even been in the woods.

Yep, I was talking about UKC.

I never even think of the AKC ones but I bet you are right in that I doubt very many of them would even bark at a coon or know what one was.

Rachel most ppl dont care about anyone or anything other than what they have tied at home! Sad to say but is true, to many narrow minded folks these days. The show world has quadrupled over the years and most (not all) but most that r going to say anything negative are not worth your time! I know as well as you and the ppl that truely show know the amt of time and dedication it takes. I too agree and work mine on a coon. Unfortunately not enough do but to each their own. Just because I am not into competition does not mean a dog can not hunt!!! Just take pride Rach in what you have and how you love to do it. For what its worth, I have posted this before I am a coonhunter and have been for 30 plus years but my wife and 13 year old boy show dogs and I also show occasionally we do this as a family ..
My son had a young english male dog that he had #2 in the english breed and we was at a hunt ,field trial bench show , water race and treeing contest and another young boy walked up I am guessing he might have been 10 years old and was making over my sons young english dog that was sitting #2 in the top ten and I ask that boy if he liked to show dogs and he said yes but he did not own his own dog and my son ask him if he would like to have his own dog and that little boy said yes and so my son told him if your parents dont care I will give you my dog to show if you promise to take good care of him and I will have to say that was the happiest little boy I have ever seen and was also proud of my son for thinking of someone else and getting the started with a there own hound.
hold on I just about forgot the most important part we entered 5 events that day and won 4 of them ..And before you ask I did not hunt that night it was around 95 degrees and I was hot and tired after running 4 heats in the water race and 4 heats in the field trial but usually I hunt

THE MAIN THING IS WE DO IT AS A FAMILY AND HAVE FUN

as of May 2012 my son had his english GR CH FOLSOM PRISON BLUES #2
MY WIFE HAS HER Black and Tan GRCH LAUREL CREEK DAZZLE #9
NOW SINCE MY SON GAVE HIS DOG AWAY HE PURCHACED ANOTHER PUP FROM SCARLETT OVERTON THAT WILL SOON BE IN THE TOP TEN HE HAS WON THE YOUTH NPHA NATIONAL QUALIFIER AND A WV STATE POINT EVENT SHOW AND A COUPLE OTHER SHOWS , THE BLUE THUNDER SHOW WARRIOR ,11 MONTH OLD ENGLISH

I LOVE THE COMPETITION HUNTS AND I DO HUNT THEM BUT LIKE I WAS READING EARLIER IN THIS POST THERE IS MORE CHEATING GOES ON NOW THAN EVER BEFORE

SORRY FOR WRITING A NOVEL BUT I THINK IF EVERYONE HAD THERE FAMILY INVOLVED THERE WOULD BE ALOT MORE HAPPIER COONHUNTING FAMILIES ,, JUST MY OPINION

Shame on you guys

After reading these post I would say shame on you guys for trash talking fellow houndsmen. I don't show, probably never will , never even been to a show. But if these people want to show that's fine, my grandpa was a hell of a coonhunters his whole life, when he got to old to hit the woods he got a dog to show, he died before he ever got the chance. The problem with the B&T race isn't cause the show people breed the hunt out of them, it's all you breeders trying to play God, you call it line breeding, that's just fancy talk for inbreeding. Why cannot you find an unrelated dog to breed too that has the things your looking for, I want my son to be 6 ft tall, but I'm not going to &&&& my cousin or half sister to get it. It's unnatural. I know it's not all breeders but plenty past and present. Good luck to all the show hounds, comp. dogs and breeders out there who just want to enjoy there hobbie, it's to much time and money not to. Thanks Matt.

After reading this post i went back and reread the entire thread. I couldnt find a single hateful comment other than yours about not being able to hang in the real world and that anyone who feels it is wrong to breed hounds based on appearance doesnt care about anyone but themselves. WAKEup if you think the entries in the shows have guadrupled over the years you live on a different planet than the rest of us.

Ya'll still beating this DEAD horse?!

Who cares? Support for our clubs come from shows just as it does the hunts.

Said it before and here goes again ~ If we dont stick togeather as a team this sport is going to dry up and blow away! I personally hate showing. Id much rather watch from the sidelines. I still try tho. Just so I can participate and support our sport.

Why even start this again.....Its better then "What feed your feeding" .....well maybe not.

Here we go again...........

Someday maybe people who strictly show coonhounds will wake up and realize that coonhounds are 1st and foremost a HUNTING breed not a SHOW breed. Show people seem to always quote the "standards" but only the conformation parts not the hunting ability part of the breed standard. Hunting ability in a hunting breed should never be forsaken in lieu of conformation.

These days it seems the emphasis is on one venue or the other - show or hunting. People breed 4-5 generation all grand show lines with no hunting titles or hunting ability or they breed 5-6 generation GrNitetChs with poor conformation.

Breeders and owners need to take a step back in time to the 80's when the epitome was owning a Dual Grand.

Yes it's going to end! If we don't stick together as hound owners, were a minority and the anti's would like to put us all sitting on the front porch watching cars pass by.
We need to enjoy our own hounds and be kind to other hound owners.

What is funny to me ... I can look at a set of papers and know it is show or hunt peds... I have been with walkers all my hunting life and have enough since to know and don't give a rats hind end who shows them. I have noticed the one's fussing about show dog's are most always lacking coon treeing power any dang way. I will never show a dog it is not my thing. I own a lab and do not hunt ducks does that make my lab girl less than?

But if you did what you are saying hunt and not show then we wouldnt have HOUNDS. No offense to anyone on here but I have seen some hunting dogs on here that DO not resemble a hound. So I think hunting and showing goes hand in hand. Doesnt matter which one comes first cause your going to need to breed those good huntng dogs with the hounds which have good confirmation to win shows so we can have hounds. And not pionted eared yipers. If hunting comes first I am sure I could train a German Shepard to hunt coons. but I want to listen to a hound bawl.
