Training puppies during the summer months.

What's everyone's opinion on starting pups during the summer months, the wife bought me a a blue tic puppy for my birthday.and He's just now 4 months old. I've been messing with him a little bit with drags and he has showed some interest in the couple if cage coons that I have showed him so far. I'm just worried that if I wait four months from now to start him in the woods at night might really set him back. What do you guys think would be best for him

OLD TIMER

The Old Timer makes a good point…but like you are doing with the pup is good training if done correctly…woods time is good if in a controlled environment…don’t take the pup to the woods and then restrict its movements because you are worried that mama coyote…in other words trying to prevent something from happening to protect the pup but actually causing another by indirectly training the pup negatively without you realizing it…
But little training scenarios are great just not too often to keep from burning out the pup, always stopping on a good point…

Training dogs is not so much about quantity, it's more about timing, and the right situations...After that it's up to the dog....A hunting dog is born...

Now is the time to teach your pup to handle. Teach hm to come when you tone him and/or call him.

Teach him to heal while on leash and off leash. Teach him to load in the dog box and to ride quietly while in the box.

Take him to events and teach him to lead quietly and calmly as you mingle amongst other hound people and their hounds on the premises.

A well behaved hound that is also an excellent hunting dog is truly a pleasure to own!

I'm probably going to be in the minority here but I used to take mine for walks to get them accustomed to the woods. And occasionally, I had a friend with coons coming into his sweet corn patch. If you are lucky enough to time it right, you can get some hot races in one.

It can be a great time to start a pup. Hell I take my pups out for walks in the woods here at least three nights a week. It’s great for building their confidence in the dark. I got feeder buckets out so there’s usually plenty of coons around and you can see the young hounds start to use their noses. Sometimes you get that prodigy that actually picks one up & runs a track at 4-5 months old. It’s a great way to gauge when a pup is ready for more serious work or to see if your efforts & time working them on drags is paying off. Personally I’ll do this kinda stuff before I ever try working them on caged coons, some don’t need to see a caged coon at all.

Thanks everyone, There's a lot of great advice in here and I appreciate every word of it. It's hard to not want to rush this pup but for his betterment I think it's best I slow my role and just stick with the basics for now, I definitely don't want to rush him.
