Going back to tree
How do you guys correct this. Won’t do it alone, only in a cast situation. Also if you try and set him up with the shock collar on he doesn’t do it. He’s a smart dog, no shock collar and in a cast he knows he can’t get in trouble. I have corrected him with a switch but doesn’t seem to help. He doesn’t do it every tree and it’s somewhat unpredictable when he is going to do it. It has cost me quiet a few casts and is starting to really irritate me.
A smart dog can be a real pain sometimes, I've had to get down right rough with my female I'm hunting now. She wouldn't recast very well I'd turn her back loose and cut my light off and go back to the tree and wait after several times she got the message. I teach my dogs to hunt to the light wherever I point my light is the direction they will go, I also teach myinenthe hunt command. I never use a a lead I can walk out and click the light on and say go hunt and they are back on the way but it took awhile. But I've also have a buddy who runs a 'dummy' collar on his made of wood. Dog thinks it's a shock collar and is straight as long as it's on. It's worth a shot. But that's just my two cents and that's about all it's worth.
dumby collar
Dummy collar might work, but be careful. I had to use bark collars to keep 2 of my hounds quiet in the pen at the house. One of my females then refused to bark when I put the tracking collar on her (she thinks she has a bark collar on) and won't bark until another dog barks first or the scent is so strong she can't help herself. Even then she starts barking quietly before she really opens up.

Set the dog up
Set up a pleasure hunt that simulates a comp hunt. When a tree is made have someone stay at the tree with a switch. When the dog goes back run him off. It depends on the dog as to how many times this could take.

Everyone of them are different but stop leading the dog more than a few feet off the tree. I take about 2 steps and send mine.

My Question..
How old is the dog you are havin problems with??
That plays a big factor in the way I would try to correct the problem. I ,personally, wouldnt start usin a switch at the tree on a 5,6 or 7 month old pup.

Going back
I seriously doubt the dog is a little puppy. If a child does something wrong do you let them keep doing it until they get half grown or nip it in the bud right now. He says the dog is going back to the tree while on a comp hunt. Do you really think it's a 5 month old pup. If it is treeing it's own coon it doesn't need to be in the woods with another dog unless on a cast or breaking a habit like backing. I probably should have suggested to hunt the dog alone and make it go the other way from the start.
