Breeding thoughts?

Have a 7 year old female that is a outstanding hound coming into heat. Should I breed her to a full litter mate brother that is outstanding also, or to one of her half brothers that are good solid hounds but not outstanding. This would be the fifth generation family line breeding.

Breeding

Best to Best.

If you didn't have papers, what would you breed to? That's the way I'd go.

Look at the reproducers list for proof. You will see stud dogs bred almost exclusively to Gr. Nite Ch. females, and if they get 14-15%, they are considered great reproducers. That's 1 out of 7. Not so great.

You never know what crosses will click, so, I think it's best to go with what your gut tells you to do rather than trying to match up papers. Breed the dogs, not the papers.

Keeping breeding within a family line for multi-generations purty much requires the sacrifice of quality for maintain the family line. This is evidensed by the consideration to breed to a dog that is good but not outstanding simply because it maintains the line. And breeding to a full littermate is about as risky as it gets.
I'd breed to the stud that offered the most to your line of hounds regardless of that studs pedigree.

If you like what you have you better stay fairly close, every time you go somewhere else the chance for the whole dynamics to change is great.
If I did go with an outcross it would have to be an older proven stud that i know what i am getting.

If it were me I would breed within the family...if no physical faults and they are top hounds I would look hard to find all the reason why I should breed siblings and also why I shouldn’t and decide...what about the sire? What does he possess as strong points?

Breeding the right dogs is half of it...selecting and retaining the best pups is the other half...

How close is the 5 generations of family breeding? You can get to close.I might get blasted for this but the clover line of dogs used to be the stoutest out there. Guys started using it in some heavy line breeding. They ruined most of them. Line breeding is just a tool for a breeder to use but they have to be willing to cull extremely hard. No mediocre off spring is allowed to be bred. If you let that happen then that’s what you start getting.

The closet I have bred them is to a uncle or aunt, then to cousin.

Thats the same way I have always done it and in some peoples eyes is not heavy line breeding. Im not here to tell you what to do but I was you, and her brother is that good then do it. However if you do keep the pups with friends and if any show any bad traits cull them fast. If it works then great if it doesn't then its a lesson learned.
