Pulling up short
Ok guys. I need some advice. I have a young dog that I think is pulling up short. Heres what happens. When I turn him out with my older dog they will strike and run the track and then fall treed. When we get to the tree, no coon. This has happened a couple of times. So tonight I decided to turn my older dog out alone. He trees so then I let the young dog go. Get to tree and coon is seen. My old dog has always been hunted alone and is pretty accurate but he is not perfect and will honor another dog which is why when my young dog pulls up short my older dog will fall treed with him. My question is how do I need to handle this. Im just a pleasure hunter needing some advice. Thanks.
Split them up,if the old dog will back him they both will start coming up short, hunt him alone and hope he figures out how to work the track.

if your old dog will back on BS he's not fit to be a pup trainer. If your young dog is pulling up short he needs correction quick I don't mind dogs treeing together but I never send one in to a dog already treed.if they didn't work to get there they shouldn't be there.
You didn't give a lot of details about how much the young dog is slick treeing. I've never seen one go from 10% to 90% accuracy. Good luck though. I'd try to get your old dog straitened out first . Take him with a treeing fool and go to work.

What part of southeastern nc are you hunting
My one year old tried that a few times last season when he was just getting going good, tri tronics on level 6, shocked him plum off the tree, my buddy called me crazy, now he calls me to use my 95% accurate dog to start pups with.

First thing you MUST do is split them up. Only hunt that pup by it's self. When going in to the tree, do not praise nor punish this dog until you search the tree. If you feel confident there is no way a coon can be in that tree, walk up and scold the dog with a rough voice. What ever words you use to scold, be sure to use every time you find the tree to be empty.
Now after you scold the dog for the coon not being there, leash the dog up, walk it 30-40 yards away from the tree, and then walk a complete circle around the tree, until you see they dog start showing interest in scent on the ground again. If the dog never picks up scent lead it right on out of there, BUT if the dog does seem to show interest like it has picked up a track (scent again) ENCOURAGE the dog to find that scent and release him to see if they will work the track on out of there or at least to a different tree.
You MUST remain consistent with this practice until you see the dog getting better at picking up scent leaving the tree. After about 30-50 times of this you may be able to use the command word "only" to get the dog to get down off the tree and start looking for the track. But the dog first must learn the command word, and then "second" understand when you are wanting it to preform. And it takes repitition for a dog to learn this. Some learn quicker than others, so a lot of this will depend upon your ability to be consistent, and the dogs ability to understand. Good Luck!!
