Voice Comands

I was watching the Pursuit channel last night and they where working Setters on Pheasant, in IA , the guy shot his bird and said bring , and the dog brought him the bird , I wonder if that works for Coon dogs and squirrel dogs ?

I know for sure it works for squirrel dogs ! but I have all ways been under the tree for coon and never saw the need .

voice comands

Iv always enjoyed watching, Bird hunter talk to their dogs .
Border Collies , work good with Voice and Hand signals as well , wish I had one that would tote the coon to the truck for me

I have had bird dogs trained to voice commands. I have had coon hounds trained the same way. If you're willing to spend the time, a coon hound can amaze you. To most hound hunters if you can call one to you, it's amazing.LOL

I've always taught my hounds to fetch.
I've had them bring me a lot of coons over the years.
It makes it nice when you don't have to wade a creek or waterhole.

My walker will load up, come and sit when told. And i am thrilled with that. To have him carry coon would be icing on the cake.

Depends on the dog. Voice commands fall under working intelligence.
Blood hounds for example have a high level of instinctual intelligence but a low level of working intelligence. Doesn't mean there dumb, there just wired different.

Some hounds have more instinctual intelligence and not so much working intelligence. I've found that the ones that pick up things like leading and loading quick tend to excel in working intelligence. Where other hounds that tend to be more bull headed or simple minded, doesn't mean there dumb, it just means there intelligence is probably more instinctual based. I've heard some guys claim that simple minded hounds progress quicker in the field, and in theory that would makes sense. I personally haven't found that to be the case though. I prefer a well balanced hound that has a high level of working intelligence and is an all natural in the woods.

My main female will hunt on command, can be called off tree, lead on command,load on command,sit,fetch, among other things.

retrieving hounds

I have had 2 female hounds, a walker and a redbone, that brought coon back to me, usually ones they caught on track and killed. I never gave them voice commands to do it though. The redbone did it a lot. I was hunting her one night in snow over my boots in February a couple years back, and I heard her make an odd sound. I looked on the gps and she was just under 300 yds. She slowly made her way back... it was fun to see a little 47 lb dog carrying her coon back almost 300 yds in snow up to her chest!!!
