WI DNR Biologist Training Program and Mock Nite Hunt
Our WI DNR has developed a training program for our new biologists that encourages them to learn about all activites that could involve the game and property they are to manage. This is great news for us, as they put coonhunting and Nite Hunts on the agenda!
We have been invited to their dog training day in October, during which they will learn about retrievers, pointers, hounds and more. We will be putting on a "Mock Nite Hunt" to give them a more clear understanding of what happens out there. We offered this once before, and everyone involved had a great time!
We will need 8-12 responsible, respectable handlers and their very seasoned dogs to put on a quick bench show and one hour hunt, in UKC style. We would like to have each breed represented.
If anyone would like to help out with this, please get in touch, as we need a few more volunteers. I can be reached at 262-903-0234.
Thanks for your support!
Erika

So sorry I'm going to miss it! We pack up the family and move to NC this weekend.
It was a true pleasure hunting in Wisconsin (pleasure and competition), the short time I was there!

Little help?
David, I hope you enjoyed yor short stay in beautiful Wisconsin! Thank you for your help up here!
Anybody, anybody? We need some volunteers. This is a pretty fun event, and a great chance for us to get off on the right foot with some of the department's newer biologists. We need representatives from each breed and a few good coondogs
Thanks!!
The big winner of our "Mock Nite Hunt" was Daryl Stanton and Bugger, with 275+. Beyond that, this event was a "win" for coonhunters in Wisconsin. Our DNR held a 3 day workshop to expose our 18 newly-hired biologists to hunting dog sports, and competitive trials in specific. Retrievers, pointers, etc. Thankfully, the hounds were invited too! We had a great discussion beforehand to explain what it is we are trying to accomplish and how the hunt works. Then we drew out 3 casts and sent them out for an hour long hunt using UKC Nt Ch rules. Being coonseason, several of the biologists asked if the could shoot the coon as well, so we did break that rule right off the bat, lol! On our cast, they got into it pretty quickly, though they were helping Old Pokey (Dave Pollard) call his dog when she got hard to hear. I thought I'd have to scratch him! They were great fun!
This event was a great opportunity to get off on the right foot with those who could have influence within the DNR on how, when and where we run our dogs. Our goal was to give them a positve impression of coonhunters and a better understanding of our sport. Every time we do something like this, the participants are surprised at how different it is from their expectations. This tells me that we need to keep working to educate those working for our state agencies and even our friends and neighbors. Keep it up guys!
Thank you to these wonderful representatives: Terry Loeffelholz, Dave Pollard, Daryl Stanton, Jake Appel, Joel Appel, Jon Walz, Dusty Tuchalski, Ross, Paul Eickelkraut, Bryce Eickelkraut, Derek Furniss and to their respecitve clubs: SW WI Coonhunters, Sundown Coonhunters, Jefferson County Coon and Fox Hunters, Sugar River Coonhunters. Great job!!!
Check out some pics from our cast:
