mountain curs

I'm thinking of buying a mountain cur pup. A friend of mine has one and I really like him. I was just wondering what everyone else thinks of them. The one my friend has is very accurate. When he trees its something up there. It trees squirles during the day and coons at night.

Each to his own, but I have had many dozens, I have only owned one that I would call a coon dog.

They're nothin like hounds. Most all of them are really hot nosed. But they listen a lot better than a hound, and they are the best companion you'll ever have. Don't use physical force on em. A stern voice is all most need to understand they're doing wrong. Try him out. He'll only become what you make him.

That's news to me. Sure some are but more and more hounds are hot nosed these days too.

Not trying to start an argument or debate but most hound hunters that are used to hunting open trailing dogs believe the curs are all hot nosed since most curs tend to be silent or mostly silent on the ground. Since they don't hear the dog running the track and just come treed they assume it was a "hot pop - up coon".

Another factor is that since most curs are mostly silent they tend to get up on a coon and force it to "pop-up" since the coon doesn't get advance notice like they would with a more open dog.

I have watched enough curs run a lot of cold tracks on ground, snow, ice, and frost on the garmin to know. In fact I am doing it right now as I type.

Like any breed of any hunting dog, you can find whatever you want if you look for it.

I like em bought my daughter one about five months ago guy I got him from had a deep freeze you couldn't stuff another coon hide in. I would say get you one .

I HAVE HUNTED WITH CURS AND REALLY LIKE TO SQUIRREL HUNT THEM,U CAN COON HUNT THEM AS WELL MY FRIEND DANNY CONRAD HAS CURS AND HUNTS BOTH WITH THEM.HE HAS A LITTER OF PUPS NOW THAT ARE A PROVEN CROSS HIS PH.# IS 270-670-3438 GIVE HIM A CALL I BELIEVE HE HAS 2-3 NOT SPOKEN FOR.

if you want open trailing cold nose cur the Stephen stock mtn cur will do that for you.
also danny Conrad's curs should have good nose on them,some may open on a coon track &some be silent.

I would prefer a dog that opens on track a little

I've been coonhunting curs for years. They open up a lot of hunting ground that you couldn't hunt with a go yonder hound. You can get an open cur, some lines are mostly open. I don't miss hounds at all!
