coonhound paralysis

I have a 2 yr old male redbone. Vet says it is coonhound paralysis. Gave him steroids. It has been 12 days since the first signs of symptoms. Any advice or therapies. Have been doing home care exercises, getting him up to try to walk. He is moving around on the floor better, moving legs and head better. We have him on cushions to make him comfortable. Eating and drinking okay. Any advice will helpful TY

You are doing a good job. Thats about all you can do for him. That is a rough disease to watch one go thru. I have seen one go thru it and it wasnt pretty. Hope yours gets over it . Sounds like he will.

Thank you. Today he ( Junior ) is looking like he is trying to stand. he can get his rear up about 2 inches. I thought he would be out of this by now, or at least hoped. Trying to find somewhere to take him for water therapy. I hear that will help too. Amy

been there

dont know what vet has told you but i had a female a few years back had this.It can take 2 months or more for dog to recover from this so best you can do is be patient and keep dog as comfortable as possible.

I had a dog go through this to be honest its been to many years to remember how long it took her to come out of it but one thing i did to help her get her strength to walk again was wrap a towel around her so that i could hold her weight for her and help her walk at first she only go a few feet and she was exhausted but each day got better and she got stronger.

I had a dog that had it i would turn it over about every 3/4 hours and made a sling and hoisted him up so he would need to use his legs to move around.

This is a really good idea. stops them from getting sores where they lay as well as help them move when they want. Kind if like when a horse has a broken leg, or two. And once her body is ready, you could put him in this and lower them into a large tub of water to exercise him, swimming is great for them but you don't want to do it to early cuz it also wears them out very quickly.

There was someone north if me that had a B&T that got it, I want to say he stillhad ssymptoms after 6 months. I was up at their place in august (he got it during kill season the year before, which here starts in. Sept and ends I January or February) and one of his legs still had problems, the ligaments were still tightened from months of inactivity. So easily 7-9 months later they were still dealing with it

Thanks for all the advice. My husband started putting him in the creek today for water therapy. We don't have the funds for the special care. junior did good. We need to try the sling idea, I think that would help too. This is a shame because he is doing so well at showing and hunting. We also have his father. Does anyone know if this is contagious to other dogs????

We had a bloodhound that got this. It is carried mostly by Oppusums.
it was true in this bloodhounds case cause he consumed the dead possum. it is not contagious. wont spread to other dogs. all you can do is move him around, give him his meds, and wait it out. hope he gets better soon.
