Hunting durin the summer

I haven't been into coonhunting long and this is my first summer to hunt. I was wondering how y'all keep ur dogs hydrated and cooled down during huntin is there anything special things that y'all do? Also what do y'all do if ur dogs get bitten by snakes? Thanks for the help.

my best advice is to bring water and hunt them around water. Not sure about snakes dont have to worry about them around here

i take 2 gal. of water and a pump sprayer. everytime i see them, as they come back i give them water and spray them. at first they're jumpy about being sprayed but after a while they come to appreciate the cool. as for snakes, i carry brynadral and dexamethozone. i crush the tablets and put them into a syringe, suck up some water and squirt it down their throat. if they get one good run done we go home.

I limit turnouts to one or 2 drops.
I hunt places that have water.
When walking out from the tree I stop when crossing creeks I stop and splash water on the dog.
I keep water for the dogs with me in a large container.
I only hunt a couple nights per week when it is this hot.

Get a spray bottle and mix water with a little rubbing alcohol and spray them down when you get back to the truck...especially there ears. This cools them down FAST!

We hunt all summer long, the key is to have your hound in condition. The past two years have been extremely dry with little water in the creeks. Feed your dog a meat based feed with about ten percent fat, I feed a chicken/rice diet. Hunt your dog on a regular basis, don't hunt one night this week and not hunt for two weeks, don't turn an over weight dog loose in the heat, many nights the temp on my truck thermometer will be 98 when we turn loose and not get much cooler. In many years of hunting I have had one dog suffer heat exhaustion, and that was after a corn field race. Hope it helps, Tom
