one of those opening nights

Every year the coonhunters at warsaw ill sponser a little coonhunt-soup supper,it is pretty much on the honor system,if you say you treed a coon, your name goes in the hat for top 4 draws of the 5 dollar entry fee pay back.a few of the local merchants donate door prizes(dog food, pop, hats, etc).
It seems i carry an opening night curse as for several years running i could not get one treed on the outside to save my @@@,something always went wrong,i got to where i did not even want to go on opening night lol.well i finally broke it last year !,
Last night turned out to be one of those GOOD nights we all desire, rain was coming in and the coons were really moving. My wife accompanied me and a couple buddies, she brought the video camera as i want to get some footage of my favorite potlicker. My one buddy was running a little late so we made a dump down the road from his house ,figured we had time for one before he was ready. On the way to the turnout we seen 3 different coons cross the road.
We cut Rattler,Moonlight and a pup, this is the 2 nd time Rattler has been hunted since last dec.Well the old dog started locating and finally talked himself into it,the other 2 backed him,go thru a little brush and i will say he just missed.Loaded up ,picked up our other buddy and drop in a big picked cornfield along a creek, we dont hear anything for a few minutes then hear Rattler fall treed right at the end of the field,we drive up to him, moonlight has backed him,it is a big old maple den.My buddies dog is not there so we turn Rat and moonlight loose, they dont go another 50 yds and Rat falls treed, then sis, my buddies little female splits just another 50 yds away, moonlight backs Rat.leash up the dogs and sis has a BIG coon,i drop it but he comes out plumb mad,sis is on him but he is running like a banshee,we are chasing the 2 of them thru the brush and i am trying to get another bullet in the coon without killing the dog lol, this was a ten thousand dollar video if it would have been caught on tape,my wife was too busy laughing at us idiots to get the camera out.the coon was crawling all over us and the dog .we finally got the job done after considerable effort lol.we go to Rat and moonlights tree, it is a leafy rascal and takes a while but my buddy (todd) gets him found,2 shots and he is on the ground.we make the short journey to the truck and just as we get in, it starts raining. We move to another location and the rain had already passed,we turned sable ,sis and moonlight on this dump,we dont hear them for 5 minutes or so and sable starts locating, she checks herself and then sis and her come in and slam it . a big sycamore on a small creek bank, moonlight backs them.the coon is found and given to the dogs,we decide the storm was rolling back in so just drove around an counted deer(well over 40) for the next hr before check in.This night we never had to walk over 100 yds all together, did not get wet, and the dogs did a real good job.Something i have come to appreciate. One of these good nights makes us forget about all the bad.I am tickeled that my wife taped most of this, Rattler will be 9 in a couple of weeks so this is something i can cherish for years.

Sounds like a good time. My brother in law had the same curse opening nite and couldnt get a coon treed. He quit after a couple trees when the rain started. Them nites happen, like it or not. Hope the season treats you well. Good luck next weekend.

Tony, it sounds like you at least stayed dry and saw coon. Me and Burkey got soaked 5 minutes after we turned loose. After finding dogs with tracker and waiting 2 more hours for it to quit, we called it a night. Give me a call if you've got a free night before weather gets bad. Ron Behne
