Trying to teach my new pup to be a show dog??

I just bought a 6 week old leopard hound pup. I'm planning on making it a coon/show dog. I know how to make her a good coon dog but no nothing about showing dogs. She is beautiful and should make a nice show dog and an even better coon dog.. Her parents were coon dogs.. Any help is appreciated!! Thanks

i will tell you the way i was tought... look at the coon hound books and set the dog similair to the ones int he book straight front legs stnad them on the toes square the back legs up head up and tail up and let the pup burn the extra energy off that it has before you start training it... dnt get frustrated with the pup if you feel yourself getting frustrated then take a break and breath and go at it again later on...

ok so alot of time and work basically? How long does it take to make a show dog on average?

Get ya a bench. Get her used to standing on it. Dont worry about feet palcement yet. Just get her used to it and standing still. Its all about repetition. Then move to getting feet right, etc.

Also go to a local show and get some tips. Watch some people and ask some questions. Most will help you out. best way to me is have someone show you then repitition, repitition, repitition. Just keep the lessons short right now since shes a young puppy. You can do it everyday or maybe twice a day just no longer than 10minutes right now while she is young. Shell get used to standing then you can perfect everything. Keep it fun and rewarding for her.

...what Chris said.............start with her just keeping her head still.............don't even worry about what the rest of her body is doing..........when that is accomplished, start working back........front feet, then rear feet.........smart dog, it should take you about 5 minutes a day for 2-3 weeks to get her ready for the shows........good luck

Puppies have a very short attention span, so make it fun. Put her/him on the bench and work at just placing the feet, 4 square., you'll be lucky to get 3 minutes from a young pup, but do it EVERYDAY!!!!!! Make it longer each time, but no more then 5-10 minutes at a time. Look at the magazines and see how other dogs are set up and work from there. Go to a local club and fine a person that is willing to help you and show you what to do. Above all, make it fun for the dog, if your in a bad mood, DON'T work the dog when you are like that, you only will get upset and the dog can sense that and squirrel around for you and make it worse. Picture in your mind a box. You want a box when you set the dog up, front legs one side, back top of box, rear legs are the other side and the bench is the bottom. I start my pups on the bench at 6 weeks on up and by the time you are ready to hit the shows, you should be in good shape. Get the dog use to all kinds of stuff, a rabbit running loose, a cat sitting on the bench, a small dog running around, kids screaming and making noise, all that conditions a dog to be use to commotion and still preform for you. I never give treats on the bench or off the bench, my dogs thrive on praise and hugs and kisses and yes, I do it at the shows. When Tori won the state show last year, I flung my arms around her and gave her a big kiss cause she gave me 110%, ask anyone who see's me show a dog and they will tell you I always hug and praise my dog, no matter win or lose, if they gave me their all, they get praised for it.
