Can coons be squalled down...

a tree consistently?? Last night I found the coon walking in to the tree but lil brother didnt see it. I have an old primos squaller and can usually get them to look but just couldnt seem to get it to look for him last night. I didnt squall when I saw him he was just sitting there looking then ran up a little higher. Then for some reason or another I tried what a friend of mine has done and just use your mouth. Closest way I could ever describe it was since I can make short crisp barking sounds like a squirrel I just lengthened to make a very long "squall" sound while smacking my mouth on one side like an indian from an old western. Well that sucker ran down that tree the whole time I was doing it. He got to within 10 feet of my hounds and I quit and he turned and ran back up. Me and lil bro thought this was pretty cool since we never did it before. I got him to run down 2 more times just like that and every time I quit he would stop coming down and turn around and go back up. Since this is a first for me I wonder if I accidentally found the magic note to get them to move or just coincidence. Also if one starts coming down and I continue to squall, generally speaking, will he jump or go back up when they get close to the hounds? The reason for asking is with the primos squaller I can get them to look usually and most of the time they will climb higher rather than come down.

I have seen a couple of fellows get them to look out of den trees and get them to jump. I have seen 1000 guys that can get them to look occasionally. I am in the 1000 catagory.

Ted Feeler can squall them out about 95% of the time when I hunted with him.

I have real good luck mouth squalling them down. Young coon are the hardest but if they don't climb down then I just climb up after them .

I have squalled a lot of coons down. But,I would have to say that 99% of the time it is a sow that has kittens with her.

I can squall one down a lot of the time, but Irarely do it anymore. I don't like jump out races much.

An old guy in Oklahoma that taught me more about hounds and hunting than anyone else, and is the greatest dog trainer I ever saw, though he never competition hunts, can squall one out of a tree with his mouth any time he gets ready.

If you really want one to come down, tie the dogs back away from the tree a good ways. Turn your light down low, and keep it above the coon. The tendency is to want to watch the coon come down the tree, but they will come nearer coming out if you keep your light off of them.

The only time I ever squall one out any more is if I want it to come out alive for a fight to fire a young dog up a little. And then I only do it if it is pretty clean around the tree where it will be easier for the dog to catch the coon than for the coon to get away. And that doesn't happen too often.

bINGO-

Engman. When you squall them down it is usually a sow with kits and she thinks one is getting stretched down below, or when there's a lone kit up there and wants to get out. No matter how good a squaller you are, you'll never get them to consistently bail under all conditions.

There are two ways I've gotten coon to bail on me. If you're a tree climber, you can usually get them to jump out after you get pretty up close and squall a bit.

The other way is when I've unloaded my gun on them, and can't seem to hit them. They always come running down when I am trying to reload!
