-- Timekeeping on a Cast (http://forums.ukcdogs.com/showthread.php?threadid=299884)
Timekeeping on a Cast
I always like to keep time on a cast, even if I'm not the judge. I'm usually within a minute or two of what the judge says and don't recall ever being more than 5 minutes off.
This weekend I had 10 minutes left in the hunt and the judge said there was 40 minutes. He was 1 of 2 dogs left in the cast and the only one with no minus and he had zero for a score. I suspect he created time to give him a chance at plus points.
However, even going by 40 minutes left, they scored a 6 minute coon and then on the last dump, he ended the hunt 13 minutes early and avoided the 8 getting his dog.
I did make this known to the judge but did not question anything partly because I was the only other person keeping any time and partly because I've seen that most MOH's will blindly accept the judge's timekeeping. Without a majority of the cast to correct him I didn't see the timekeeping getting corrected.
Under normal rules interpretations, I'd say it would take a majority of the cast to overrule the judge on timekeeping. However, most handlers won't keep their own time and wouldn't have much idea if the judge was right or not.
Are there any solutions to this? Should the checklist read encourage ALL handlers to keep time? We require all handlers to see a coon, possum, or agree to a timeout. Should we require all to keep time?
IMO, this is an area where the guy holding the card can really get by with something. At some point he knows if anyone else is keeping time and if they aren't, look out.
Thoughts????

You are absolutely right!
And I can't see any way out of it. Fact is, many casts have a judge with no countdown or even a stopwatch. The odds of a cast having a majority keeping time is practicly zero. I always run a countdown. I make the fellas that handle my dog run a countdown, judgeing or not. I make sure they inform the judge that he make them aware everytime he stops the clock and starts it so they can do the same. In that way, the judge atleast knows they are keeping time too. But I doubt you could ever get a MOH to overrule a judges timekeeping.
this is why even using a count down i write the time in & out on score card & discuss time used on each time out. you wont have any question on time used.
Same situation with me a couple months ago. We used 45 mins in the first place because there two dogs were in the ground and mine was treed in a big oak tree. I run the hunt time with my cell phone because it's got a countdown and a stop watch and when i asked the judge how much time we used he said 20 minutes lol

I had a judge bring an old fashion pocket watch one night to keep time by. Needless to say he twisted the dial a couple times that night, judging by the time on my cell phone he closed one tree after 4 minutes of shine time and said the ten was up.

why would anyone goto a hunt without a stopwatch is beyond me. I run time on everything! Weather I'm judging or not.

I like to have someone else running a clock. You never know when a battery could go dead or you accidently bump the button and it stops or resets.

Running time
I had a handler tell me he was the only one going to run the time. I almost got scratched right then. For LOL to hard.
