Nite Hunt Question for Tank/Todd
I would like to get UKC's official ruling on this situation. At the UKC World Hunt a few years ago, I was prepared to take every step possible to find the coon when my dog treed. I had what I thought was a unique idea of taking along a laser pointer to the woods and was beginning to string it around me neck with my squaller. I was told by one of the UKC Field Reps that if I used the laser pointer in the woods, I would be scratched.
Well, as you could guess, it stayed in the truck and never made it to the woods.
I really don't see any harm in using a laser pointer. I've been involved in many casts where some of the cast members could not honestly see the coon that other members were trying to show them because they were simply looking at the wrong place in the tree.
I think by shining a laser pointer at the exact "spot" where you think you see the coon, would allow other hunters to look "exactly" where you are trying to show them the coon. It could also eliminate problems from the dishonest people who "refuse" to see a coon on occasion. If you have the laser pointer right on the coons eyes, body, tail, etc., it becomes really hard for someone to claim they can't see the coon.
Laser pointers are not expensive and therefore wouldn't be considered a disadvantage for other hunters that didn't have one. They are cheaper than a coon squaller.
So, is it permissable to use a laser pointer in efforts to try to show the judge or other cast members a coon? This would especially be good at hunts like the World Hunt where non-hunting judges are involved. Shouldn't the handler be allowed to make every effort to show the coon to the judge? After all, if it's there, the dog should get credit?!
Thanks

Well.....let me pull out the new Advisor Book and look that one up.
Well Alan, when you pick up your copy of the new Advisor book which will be available at A.O. for the first time, you will see in the Index a sub-heading for Scoring Aids. Under that heading you will see "Laser Pointers". On page 44 entitled "Let There Be Light, Very Bright Light" you will find the Advisor column which I wrote in November of '98 that allowed the use of laser pointers.
This new book is cool!
Todd,
Well, you can bet that I will be getting the laser pointer out for the hunts now!! Thanks for the clarification.
By the way, I heard that if you are a new subscriber to Coonhound Bloodlines or renew your subscription, you are entitled to an advisor book free.
Is this correct? If so, will there be people at Autumn Oaks to take renewals, etc.?
Thanks

So why did you stay back at the truck, you don't have much of a chance sitting down.
I think he said the laser pointer stayed at the truck.
Good deal on the adviser book, and I agree a laser pointer is a good tool to find coons. The only thing is they go through batteries so fast.
Has anything changed on the use of laser pointers?
Still a light!

Nothing has changed Kenny. You may still use a laser pointer in the nite hunts.
