-- Is there a more accurate breed? (http://forums.ukcdogs.com/showthread.php?threadid=255208)

Is there a more accurate breed?

Do you believe some breeds are more accurate tree dogs than others or do all have there ups and downs? But then again do you think one breed is more accurate than that of others?

Thought this would be a interesting topic.

That is most definitely true! Some breeds as a whole are more accurate. I'm not going to mention names but we all know!

I don't believe that one breed is more accurate then the next. but lines are.

I think some breeds are more accurate as a whole but it has more to do with the strain of hounds within the breed IMO. We all want a dog that's a smokin fast locator but don't want to look at too many blank trees. A lot of it is personal preference too. I don't like to see less than 80% accuracy but someone else might settle for less.

I honsetly think it is how much time you put into your hounds. And how they are rewarded at the tree.

Posted by Will Walker on 02-06-2009 03:19 PM:

some blue dogs might be more accurate but it takes them all night to get treed. i hunt walkers and had a few black and tans that slick treed just as much as any walker. i also believe accuracy comes in lines of every breed, and i believe the handler of the dog has something to do with a dogs accuracy too. if you pet your dog up when theres not a coon in the tree hes gonna fly in on the next drop and get treed quick. if you switch him for slick treeing hes gonna try his best to have a coon on the next drop.

P.S. just kidding about the blue dogs! ive seen a few i like !

We all know good and well there are more walkers under slick trees than all other breeds combined.

Now, percentage wise, I'm not sure there is such a big difference, but those that don't believe percentages are a better way to measure coondogs will just have to go on believing that walkers slick tree more.

thats cuz theres way more walkers, its a no brainer!! theres good and bad in all breeds, and if you wanna get technical about it, youd probably have better luck finding bin laden than you would a real good blue dog!!

will 2nd that

Nothing like walking a mile to a walker and look at a slick tree. I just love it, then on the way back to the truck old blue is sitting under ricky! I'd rather wait an extra 10 minutes than walk out there to ole idiot!

that 10 minutes would be ok.but its usually 4 or 5 hours. i learned one this seaon, when you hunt with a blue dog, make sure youve got good boots on or you may get frostbitten toes!!!

I have hunted with some real nice Walker dogs that I would be proud to feed but none that I'd be embarrassed to hunt my Bluetick female with, from what all I've seen she can hunt with any dog. Not quit as good as some and better than others but overall she can hunt with any. A good coondog is a good coondog, no matter what breed it is.

I remember on the 3rd comp hunt I was ever in I rode with a guy that hunted Walkers. It was a three dog cast, my blue female and two Walkers that were both in the top 6 of the PKC in Pennsylvania. I told everyone this was only my 3rd comp hunt. The guy I rode with told me all the way to the first drop how unfortunate I was bc his dog rarely ever gets beat and when he does the other Walker that was in our cast that wins. I figured "oh well I just donated my $50.00 to the cause". When the smoke cleared my little blue female put it on both of those dogs and to their credit both men shook my hand and congratulated me and told me I have a nice dog and that she didn't make a mistake all night. I'm not saying she is necessarily better than both of those dogs but she was that night.

i will take my slick treeing walker and make 5 trees see coons in 3 of them in 2 hrs over your off colored dog making one tree with a coon in it. aint that the real difference?

but some people like those slow tree dogs aint nothing wrong with that hunt what you like. not everybody is gonna like hunting a tree dog if you like listening to long races you aint gonna like hunting a tree dog. plus if you dont handle a tree dog correctly they will be a slick treeing idiot.

im working on something in the middle myself ive got a tree dog but im working on a pup thats in the middle right now. im trying hard to keep him even, the jury is still out.
