Page 51 in the rules says,
In Nite Champion and Grand Nite Champion casts, dog is scratched for running, treeing, or molesting off game during the authority of the Judge.

Just like if the dogs were to fight after the hunt time was up.

.............I asked a question similar to this a few weeks ago............dog came in to a tree where dogs were treed on a possum and started treeing it with them............UKC said you DO NOT scratch 'em...........baffles me.....but that's what they said..........

It shouldn't baffle anyone. Two different situations, two different rules apply. Dogs that arrive at the tree AFTER THE JUDGE..... are not, under UKC rules, considerd to be treed.

Well for the sake of argument, if the hunt time is over then the dog isnt under the authority of the Judge.

.....well.......the part that baffles me is how they define "during the authority of the judge", then, on page 51, as stated above..........what if a dog fight broke out........after the judge got there??.......................sorry, man.........understand what you are saying, and how the rule applies.....just hard to swallow not scratching a champion dog for backing another on a possum at ANY time during the hunt, under the authority of the judge............kinda think the hound should be finding a coon instead.........

..........can Todd or Allen put on here EXACTLY what time period constitutes "under the authority of the judge".....??

Sam, authority of the judge is defined as starting when the MOH hands the card out and ends when the card is handed back to the MOH.

coondawg, you don't need Al or Todd to define it for you. The rulebook defines it. Rule #1, last two sentences. If you don't have a rulebook, you can find the rules on the home page.

.........off topic a little...........sooo, if a dog fight breaks out in the dog box, or on the leash before the hunt time starts, they are scratched........correct??............orrr...does that get over ridden by the fact that the fight does not interfere with the dogs hunting/treeing at that stage of the game???......so you don't scratch 'em.........

I have a dumb question. Is it manditory for the judge to shine the tree on all dogs that tree after offical time is up? If not why was he (judge) shining the tree? Sounds like a lose lose situation to me.

There is nothing in the rules that says the judge even has to go to the tree with the handler when he retrieved his dog.

The moral to this story is: don't shine trees after the hunt is over

coondawg, you are confuseing "scratched for fighting" with "scratched for aggressive behavior". To scratch for being aggressive, you must also have interference. However, if dogs fight, they are scratched flatout.

Authority of the judge begins when the master of hounds hands the judge the card and ends when the judge hands the moh the card back

Authority of the judge brings back a situation I'll never forget. Many years ago most hunters didn't have those good aluminum dog boxes. They were nailed together plywood and some were covered with thin aluminum sheeting.

A couple hounds were loaded in one of those plywood dog boxes. A dog fight broke out in the box. To make this story shorter the box just exploded in all directions. At the time this was real funny. The hounds were scratched and I don't know about the dog box.

First off i would take care of the card before i even went and got my dog. Once its taken care of i would go in, grab my dog, and not shine the tree. If i did shine the tree the judge would not be with me. Saves alot of argueing. Surely you cant scratch the dog after the time is over b/c you sure can plus them if there was a coon there. Jmo

A coon dog isn't supposed to tree opossums. Stop trying to bend the rules to fit your untrained hound. Instead try bending a stick in a pleasure hunt.
