Ammo ?
just bought a new 25.06 and was gonna use it as a back up deer rifle. question is what bullets to use? i like shooting heavier loads and i think 120gr. is as heavy as they go.

I shoot the Balistic Tips with about Full Shell Case of IMR 4831.. If you reload yourself depending on the Gun start off at a current load and start work up the load till the Primers are just starting to flaten out..
This is as hot as you should go .. The Faster you can get the Balistic Tip flying the Better they will hold together But the internal Damage is unreal !! Anything over 3000 fps is good to go .. I usualy just shoot for the Diaphram just to the rear of the front leg and it will put a small hole in the entrance and a quarter size hole out the other side .. Now with that placement the Lungs will collaps / the Heart will be bruised and the Liver will shatter .. I have killed 50 or so Antelope and about that many Deer with the 25/06 all with the simulary placed Shot .. Antelope have a "Target" on them a 3" dia. black Dot at the Right Spot ...

Winchester Ballistic Silver-tips are good bullets for those sized guns.

it has lots of kill power but very little knock down power.... expect them to run a little ways... i have never had one i didnt shoot in the head not run with a 25.06
If you reload, I got some new brass i will sell.
not reloading. looking for something off the shelf.

any more imput? i wish winchester made a 120gr. power point for it. most of my shots will be less than 100yds, so head and neck are no problem. i will try it for a while, and if i cant find a bullet i like i will make a coyote gun out of it.

no offense to anyone, shootin guns is the same as which breed of dog you own. everyone has an opinion. majestic, good advice. the 25.06 , dont hit a twig with it. real fast and light lead. i shoot sierra boat tails out of all my guns if i can. they are extremely accurate. the hollow point, depends on how much damage on the meat you want. ballistic tips, you wont have any meat left if the shot isnt in the neck. i use IMR 4350, a grand powder that has never let me down.
you got a real light lead and a fast gun. the faster, the more accurate you will have to get IMO.
back to your post, with that caliber, shoot as heavy a lead as you can get if you are not going after woodchucks. you need to flatten her out and have a little knock down. be accurate though or you will be trailing alot of deer.
big bang, little lead. just a joke but, typical man.
i use a 280 rem. and have loaded my own shells for years. if you use an old hornady book and then get a new book, always go half way til you get the load you like, that is the most accurate and has the best knock down power. keep your notes and keep on keepin on.
biggest lead you can find for it. just checked my sierra,120 is it.
get them. federals have nice shootin, off the rack shells, rems are a bit random, and after that i started shootin my own shells cause i had too much money in inconsistency.

I shoot over the counter Hornady 117 gr. boattails. Don't have any problem with clean kills. Shot over 60 deer with a Remington 700 Varmit special 243 shooting 100 gr.core loks. Even an 80 gr. softpoint properly placed in the boiler room will kill a deer. It's more about shot placement.
i agree totally about shot placement, but we all know, when push comes to shove and they arent doing the hop anymore and are a flat out run on over 250 yards, i want something with knockdown power. i hunt alot of brush up here, i got a couple guns i wouldnt shoot over 100 yards without having to pick her up a couple inches.
45-70, 375 win., my 12 moss.
i love lead. i went through a 4 inch tree one time, hardly ruined any meat. dropped him.
the 6mm i got, groundhog gun. the 8mm i have, deer for sure. i got a great load for my 300 mag. also. that is my "out west" gun if i ever get there. up here, the 300, is really overkill. for sure. too fast if you dont hit a bone.
my 280 is just a tick bit slower than a 270, 100 fps, more knock down to her. and yes, all my guns are girls, lol. that is one heck of a all around gun.
steve, i always go for the neck. bleeds them out right away, never hurt an ounce of meat, and they taste better when you do that. yet to have a "gamey" one yet. an old farmer back in the day taught me that. bleed them out quick. cut the jug if you didnt hit it right. it definately works.
lee , thank you, i have great pride in my collection and my reloading skills. my dad taught me that when i was REAL YOUNG. just kept it up.

I still Shoot my 25/06 but have begain shooting a
Old 7 x 61 Sharpe and Hart a few years ago that when loaded up hot and a Balistic Tip can spit them out at around 3200 fps .. And I have droped every critter within a 20' raidous of where it was hit .. And only a few with the 25/06 went over 40 yards, A couple of very Large Mule Deer (over 240#s) went abit farther maybe 100 yds.
I hate Wasting Good Meat !! So I allways avoid hitting "The Main Meat Areas"
When you Cut thru their Diaphram theri not going Far ..

you can tell i love my guns after all of these posts,, but steve, also, i have an old 8 mm mauser that has been customized since the war. most beautiful gun you ever seen and butt to back it. still has the flip up sights and all. i dont take her out much. she is too pretty. the most accurate iron sight i ever shot. i have an old 7mm too with a bayonette. i collect anything that has to do with mausers. so, therefore, i have alot of rugers. love the actions on them.

talking about loading hot, i have a single shot 45-70, that i made my son use his first year out. i figured if he got nervous that bullet wouldnt travel 10 miles. then, i have a lever action 45-70. you cant use the same shell in them. holy moly. i was the only one that didnt get hit by the scope in the forehead. no ring on me , but def. hot. so, labeling for these two guns had to be done. single shot, not but half the powder, no kidding. two different makes also. they kick like a mule , but you can shoot through anything. period. my daddy raised me on a 12 ga. shotgun. mossberg. i still love them.

Agree with you 100% on the core loks. You said you didn't like to eat shrapnel. I take that you meant from an 80 gr. varmit load. Yea, I've skinned enough to know that it looks like tin foil inside them but when hit in the heart or lung area it's never messed up anything I eat. A lot of people would be surprised at the shock from a light cartridge that doesn't pass through.
I have a hearing problem so my stand is 80 yards above my house up on the ridge. I shoot across a hollow to the next ridge to my apple orchard which is 135 to 200 yards. Thats the reason I like a light fast round.
One man, a no shooting son of a gun, who hunts a farm between my property and the river couldn't get a clean kill with a 243 so he went to a 270, then a 30.06 and now a 300 mag. Talk about a waste of meat. I can understand how you hunt close and thick and want something heavy, but it disgust me to see someone that can't shoot compensate by shooting a cannon.
