So if I were to buy a Garmin today...

what would you suggest I buy to get the best performance possible???

Just add the truck mount antenna, that's really all you need.

A good carrying case that fits on your belt is recommended as well.

Dont do it Wayne. Wait just a little longer for the other systems to hit the market, Johnson and Marshall are about to release theirs (if they havent already). I've had two garmin handhelds and one in the truck and they all suck. Not just suck kinda...it's the bad kinda suck....like super suck with fries on the side kinda mega suck. Their stuff works great at first and then goes downhill fast. Come borrow my 3 year old $400 Garmin Rino and see what I mean...it's a paper weight now. I will NEVER buy anything made by Garmin ever again.

Didn't know jhonson was comin out with one . Don't think marshall wants to share satelites with anyone.( JUST THE RUMOR GOIN ROUND AT THIS TIME). Both will probly be expensive. I have a garmin year old I hunt the mts close to mt mitchell the highest peak this side of the mississippi river and don't have no complaints. Other than user error. Never done any updates or nuthin just lucky I guess.

who cares if it is expensive if it works???

If they ever get them out to the public I recon will find out .

Marshall has been coming out with there system for months now, and you still havent seen it. I think if they were getting close you would see some advertising.

A lot depends on how you hunt. In the midwest, we are never more than a couple miles from a road. If I lose signal on the dogs with the rubber ducky antenna, I am going to be driving anyway, so a magnet mount antenna is a given. I suppose in mountainous country where one would be many miles from a road and walking is the only choice, one would want the handheld long range antenna. I have been on the Garmin wagon for right at a year and (knock on wood) have never encountered the horror stories read here. I have done all the updates and never noticed any difference in performance, but I can't say what would have happened if I had not. Right now Garmin is leading the pack on dog tracking systems. It makes wonder if they are so far ahead that the other don't care to joint the race. Sure, it may drop a signal out there approaching a mile, but it will show the spot where the signal was dropped. A lot of the time, the dog dropped down in a ditch or went over a ridge and it will pick back up. If not, drive around to the area and more times than not you will pick it right back up. I have heard stories where a dog went underground and the spot where the signal was lost is where the hole was. Are they perfect, no. Do I feel better with a Garmin on my dog instead of a beep beep? You better believe it.

Tim, I appreciate your comments. I've read a lot of the horror stories on here as well. Although I do hunt some mountainous area, most is what I would call heavily wooded big hills, surrounded by roads within a couple miles for the most part. What I've taken out of other posts is that users expect the Garmin to be 100% without any flaws and expect to know where their dog is 100% of the time. I know in my experience using a "beep, beep" that is not nearly the case at all. At most you can get a general direction and can only guess at an actual distance, especially when hunting in unfamiliar areas. Signal comes and goes depending on terrain and more times than not if you have a dog that goes deep or is pursuing big game, we are most likely "driving around" anyway. I have hunted with 3 different guys using the Garmin one of which we were running hounds on bear in the mountains and all three systems worked great...

The Garmin haters amaze me. If you go to any hunts you'll see 95 % have a garmin. Yeah, theres a bug or two , but the pro's outweigh the cons by far. Some people do amaze me though.

Jesus Christ was perfect and still most people reject him , so I guess it shouldn't surprise me that Garmin haters are gonna be out there. ( no I'm not saying Garmin haters hate Christ) I'm just saying some folks are never satisfied.

I don't know of another topic that has been BEAT to death as much as Garmin.

I have had my Garmin for several years now. It's been used HARD this hunting season. I would purchase another one in a heart beat !
Here is why...

Gives me the accurate data needed to make a intelligent decision. I had several situations this fall where the hounds where working towards busy roads. Would off they been hit. Don't know! But I can tell you that I was able to grab tboth dogs 50 yards before I would of found out whether they would of made it across the road or not.
Just had a DC30 collar crap out after two years. Here Is how I figure it. Take the $ 200 and spread it over 100 weeks. Small price to pay for a pieice of mind.When running in bigger woods or when traveling I will run my telementary collar with the Garmin. I have been fortunate. I own four Garmin products and have had good luck with them.

a high % of the garmin problems you see on here are "user" caused. As some have already stated yes they will drop signal at times but in most cases you wait a couple mins. and move high they will pick back up.

I have had nothing but positive experiences with the garmin, and in almost a year only had one night where it lost signal with the dog. In cases like that, all you need to is get to high ground and it will pick them back up immediately.

We only use what comes with the standard package, and the Map Card. I couldn't function without the Map card.

Just my .02 cents guys.. A 2 dog beep beep system is 599.00 a Garmin is 599.00

Now lets go over some pro's for the beep beeps
1. They have great range
2. Rarely loose signal
3. Used units are cheap
4. Have several collar choices

Now lets go over pro's for the Garmin
1. They show precisely where your hound is
2.If they loose signal they mark where the signal was lost
3. Have constant updates
4. Have topo maps to show all terrian
5. WILL SAVE HUNDREDS IN GAS
6.Allows you to see wich dog is in front
7. Can tell if they are running fast game


Now con's for the Beep Beeps
1.Signal bounce
2. Still have to ride around a bunch to get accurate signal
3. Collar bleed over is always a problem
4.cannot pinpoint dogs location
5. No maps
6. No updates
7. Most are big and bulky
8. Terrian also affects range

Now con's for Garmin
1. Older collars had problems with charging
2. Still working some bugs out
3. Doesnt have the range of Beep Beeps
4. Does loose signal
5. Takes time to learn all the gadgets

Guys Garmin does have its issues but its well worth the money. It isnt like they are that much more exspensive than the old trackers. Garmin will save you tons in fuel money. How many systems can you look at the screen and say he is treed on the other side of that creek we can drive right to him.. Everybody hates the range but if your hound is constantly running out of the country sooner or later you need to question what he or she is behind.. Garmin is new and just like everything else that comes out new its not readily accepted. I know as soon as i get the money i will own a garmin.. I have been hunting with a buddy and his works great no problems what so ever. Not to mention you can mark trees on the system so you can know with out a dobt where your hound is.. But like i said im not here to pick a fight just give a honest opinoin on the garmin..

Well all I know is, the collars connect with the handheld via radio wave. That's a sound technology that probably works fine. I've had 3 garmin GPS units (Vista, Rino, and Nuvi). All 3 worked great when they were new...all 3 have failed terribly after the first year or so. My Rino (which is the same as the handheld that comes with the Astro) is completely unable to lock onto satellites. You can walk around a field at night, clear skies looking up at the stars and it finds maybe one satellite but wont give you the three needed for navigation. Since all 3 of mine did the exact same thing, I'm willing to write garmin off as junk stuff that just doesn't last. Yeah, I tried the updates, the support calls, it's all crap. I'm sticking with my Johnson beeper until the Johnson and Marshall GPS units come out to market and are tested. The test units from Marshall were due to come out by now, and proved excellent but a company sale stalled those plans indefinately. They'll be released sooner or later. Sorry, but I just cant invest in a forth unit from garmin when I'm in over a grand in 3 useless pieces of crap. To those that have luck with them, I wish you well.

you are not the only one on here that knows that, the others just wont admit it. if you go back and look you will see all the problems they have. I have hunted with too many people with garmins,and yes WHEN they work they are nice, but to many issues with them for me.

Its always the same few that dont like the garmin, as far as Im concerned if it completely fell apart after a year I would buy another and not feel taken.

I have no idea if Johnson or marshall will come out with a gps, but I cant help but think they arent...We have been hearing this too long, and if they do, I dont know why some feel it will automaticly be better than garmin.

AFTER USING A GARMIN... YOU COULDNT PAY ME TO GO BACK TO THE BEEP BEEP GUESSING GAME!!!!!!
