Thermal Imaging

With Thermal Imaging coming down in price and the quality of a low price unit going up. I have a question.
Would it be legal in a night hunt. I realize you could probably never score off the thermal image but would it be legal to use it to find the location of the coon to point out using your light.

Maybe the new buzzword won't be Coon Eyes Matter but Body Temperature Matters.

It won't be allowed until they are cheap enough and used by the majority of hunters.

One thing I have learned about UKC is never say never. I said they'd never allow one hour hunts. I said they'd never allow Garmins on during the hunt. Never say never.

There are a few that do already use them in the other 2 registries . They are not used to score the coon but used to know where to look , if you can't see it you still can't score it .

It's there or it's not don't see a problem as no scoring would take place using it.

Six years ago everyone laughed at the Garmins.
I think you will see these on the same lanyard the Garmin is on before long. lol

Bruce

Bruce do you use a thermal device. If so how good are they at finding coons in thick trees. Where do you see the prices on these getting so low? The cheap ones I have seen were at least $2000. I guess what I consider low and you see as low may be two different things. Lol

Wouldn't make a bit of difference to a slick treer. A circle is still a circle under the rules even if you know the coon isn't there. Read the rule(5A), if there is a place that could hide a coon, it's a circle.

FLIR makes a handheld one for $1100 I seen. They also make a case for your iPhone that uses the phone camera for $300. I don't know but distance might be an issue I don't know how far they will register heat. Guys will have them, now that you've mentioned it I might be one. If it works for dens, pines, and leaves on. Only can make you and your breed better if your honest.

Posted by on 02-05-2016 09:27 PM:

Think there are a couple between $300 and $400 now that would work just fine. The $400 unit is a stand alone and doesn't need cell phone and also has a decent light on it. Could be used as a back up light.

I agree. But your book and my book aren't much good in a UKC hunt. They go by their book.

I agree. I didn't figure we'd ever see being allowed to use Garmins in hunts

I don't think they will ever be allowed and I don't think price will ever affect that decision. Binoculars are still not allowed and you can by them for a cheaper price than a coon squaller.
Camera's and video tape is not allowed either without permission, and almost everybody is already packing that tool now.

When a device gives you an undue advantage in scoring a tree against someone who doesn't have that same capability then that device will not be allowed to help you score a tree.

Now some are gonna play the Philadelphia Lawyer card and say; well that device doesn't help me score the tree, it only shows me where to look!! I hear what you are saying but that still won't cut it as a man that doesn't own a thermal device is required to search the whole tree to find a coon, and the man using the device is only required to search the area that shows the excessive heat.

The value in the device for me will not be in the hunts but the training during the week.

Posted by 1moredrop on 02-06-2016 12:36 AM:

The unit I believe Bruce is talking about is made by SEEK, the hand held unit is the REVEAL it runs 399$, the other options are also made by SEEK, they use your cell phones camera along with a device you plug into your charging port on your cell to turn your phone into a thermal camera.. They make them for both for Iphones and androids price is 300$

Lets forget competition but why would anyone not want to know the facts about what is or is not in a dogs tree.

I'd like to have one but hard to get an answer on how well they work exspecially in the summer

Posted by on 02-06-2016 01:33 AM:

Sleepy head that is exactly what we were discussing today. Sometimes when we tree on a summer night it is 85 outside and if the coon is around 98* will it pick up that little difference.

I got one coming and i will be doing some testing and making videos to see if they really work.

Posted by sleepy head on 02-06-2016 01:35 AM:

That's what I was hoping for Mr Bruce

Posted by JiM on 02-06-2016 01:40 AM:

I agree with Bruce, forget the comp hunts, they would be an invaluable training aid. Right up there with the Garmin. Of course there will always be those who refuse to correct a dog at the tree for fear they will quit treeing and those guys will be forever saddled with whatever the dog gives them but for most, they will greatly reduce the instances of a dog treeing empty with no correction.
I will buy one the very minute Conkey starts selling one for under $600 that he says is worth it.
