Porkies in P.A.??
Gonna be huntin in PA so near ANF. What my question is, to guys that live up there do you have trouble with your hounds getting into porkies? My dogs are very coon minded but they have never been around porkies.? Just woundering if a coon hound will even mess with them?
hey
bring so pliers...
I live about 30 miles from the club. If you hunt East of Meadville you maybe find more porky's. If you hunt west from Meadville to Ohio you won't find near as many. Where I am at I have seen one porky, but if I got 15 miles East they become a whole lot more abundant.

It doesn't make much sense to me why a dog would mess with them, I sure hope my female doesn't LOL

I live in Okla. but we have a few around here. So far the only time I have had a dog get into any was a very straight dog and he got 3 in the end of his nose. I think he just ran into it before he saw it. Most I have seen that really messed with one was full of quils. That was a long time ago and so far no more problems.
So if your dog is straight I wouldn't worry about it much.

If mine gets down wind of trash and I know it they get shocked. The amount of shock depends on how far down wind.

I live SMACK in Porcupine country, about 40 minutes due East of the ANF. I have 1 dog out of 4 that never touched one, They really are not that bad of a problem if you can get a roadkill (very easy) and work the dog with a collar....a blanket makes it easier to get the quills out.

when I lived up in northcentral PA they were every where so you could break dogs off of them but in southcentral PA there aren't many but we did manage to find one a few years ago. Pulled what we could and paid the vet to pull the rest. I haven't seen one since and happy about it. I believe it cost us both around $180.00 and both dogs had to stay over night.

In the last 10 years, I have seen more and more porkies this way! Over this past summer, I have seen just about 1 a week around where I hunt! I have had 1 dog get into them so far 2 years ago. I pulled what I could and left the rest in for a day before I took him to the vet... He hasn't fooled with one since.
I would consider them to be a nusance such as an armadillo in the south if you know what I mean...

Always figure your dog WILL grab a porkie and have pliers in your pocket. Consider it a blessing if he don't. Quills aren't always all in their mouth, pretty common to have quills in their legs, feet and chest also. Quills in the feet and joints can lay a dog up for awhile.
I live in central PA and let me tell you...WE HAVE PORKIES!!!!!!! Neighbors Pitbull has had them pulled out of him 9 times since last year. 1 time they pulled around a 1000 of them. Knock on wood, we have only every had to pull quills around 4 times and not a lot. But they guy that hunts with us has a dog that will look them up and go after every one of them. She trees coon 95%, but let her at a porky and she gives 110%! Bring some pliers and know someone that has horse tranquilizer, 1/2 cc and the dog usually is ok. The Pit bull needed 4 cc's of Ace to knock him out and he was still snapping at the pliers.

Treeing them is one thing, catching them on the ground or picking them off the side of a tree as they take their own sweet time climbing is a different MAJOR mistake. Old porky don't do anything fast except mess up your dog and spoil your night.
I think this is just a plea from the pennsylvanians in hopes of keeping folks away from there zone LOL
