Old timers

I started in the 60’s and no gps or correction collars for many years. I have left dogs in the woods overnight because I could not find them. Because of that there was a certain uneasiness whenever I unsnapped a hound. That uneasiness took some of the pleasure of the hunt away. Now with the GPS systems that uneasiness is gone. No matter how far that young dog chases that deer trash there is a very good chance I will get to him that’s night.

and what if???

you forget to turn the collar on or didn't charge it and it went dead---can your dog today find where it was cast?

Back it the 50s-60s we ran fox at night and they would always be back home by the next evening.

Don't get me wrong, these new systems are very nice but they have also caused some problems too. The biggest one is when you put electricity in the hands of an idiot. Ever wonder how many good pups have been wrecked because of the almighty shock collar?? I have seen times I wish I could have taken the controller from the hunter and the collar off his dog and switched them around.

Old timer

I have done both dead collar and forgot to turn it on and that old uneasiness returned and the pleasure of the hunt diminished. I agree the advancements have created some new problems. I will not hunt a go yonder dog but hunt hounds that basically hunt with me. This reduces some of those problems but there were idiots prior to electronics. I have seen dogs get mistreated to the point it made me sick.

One big plus with gps is you don't have to worry that it is going to be too windy. Or if your hearing is BAD , you still know where your dog is. I take the dogs for a walk at 2 AM almost every day now that I am retired. It sure is nice with the dogtra that I just need to glance at my big phone screen to know exactly where my dogs are. My only complaint on dogtra is you can not get exact timing on shocking the dog if needed. Your timing is slowed down while you jump between screens to get to the shocking screen on your phone.
