Garmin alternative

I am looking to upgrade and would like to hear what other brands of tracking/training units others like best? Any reviews would be great.
Thanks
I currently have a Alpha 100 with t15 and t5 collars, but I don't like having to constantly lock the screens and there are way too many things that I don't want on the handheld. It is just too much and I would like something simpler.

I got a Dogtra love the bigger screen on my phone, and the maps. I have 0 complaints would buy one again tomorrow. Was little less damage on my wallet as well.

The Garmin's are really nice units- but your description of wanting something simpler makes me think you would really like the Dogtra Pathfinder. I have used mine for several years and had no issues with it, really intuitive to use.

Dogtra

I have used both and have owned the dogtra for 3 years. I have no complaints.
I can’t understand why anyone would consider the garmin in the world we live in today. I am always gonna have my phone with me. The screen is bigger, it operates smoother, and the maps are SO much better and free! I know there are several people that sync their phones to their hand held through the garmin app now too.
I don’t live in the mountains but I’m in the hills. I have never had the dogtra drop out.
I can’t say enough about this system. The world we live in is trending the direction of only needing your phone. For example. A fair amount of western big game hunters don’t carry a garmin gps anymore. With onX you can pre download the unit your hunting and use your phone just like as gps through onX with NO cell service.
I personally would love to see dogtra and onX pair up. If this happened and was done right it would really hurt garmin.
Dogtra has done a poor job getting info out to educate people on how it actually works. Most people think you need a data plan to operate it.
Save your money. Try a dogtra. You probably won’t look back.

lucky?

You fellas with the DOGTRA must be luckier than me.Ive had the dogtra for over a year and have nothing but trouble with it.I have sent it back three times and each time they tell me its fixed. When it works correctly it is great .But usually every nite at some point the collar will freez up and quit working. When i catch up with the dog it looks like everything is working correctly, collar on, light blinking as it should.Turn it off and then back on, it will work correctly again for a while.Would absolutely NOT recomend it.

That's too bad, sorry for you luck- sounds frustrating for sure. I"ve used mine for about three years and had no real issues. A couple of times I had some issues, I re-started my phone and everything worked great. One of the limitations of the Pathfinder is that the experience one has is directly related to the quality, and condition of the phone one is using.

I made sure to purchase a waterproof phone with tons of memory. I always keep other apps turned off when I'm using it.

The big difference I see is in the mapping... with the Garmin and top maps you get all the logging roads and trails show up on your map and if I'm wrong someone correct me I don't think you get that with the pathfinder maps it's just a download of Google maps. Those old logging roads and hiking trails could save you some miserable walksin the country I hunt in. JMO though
