lymes

how many people vaccinate your dogs for lymes and does it work? thx

I just vaccinated a pup for the first time and it seems to work cause he's never got lymes disease and he's got many deer ticks on him. If i were you i would get it.

I spent the money and got my three vaccinated for Lyme's disease. It's been two years now and we have a severe tick problem in this area...you cannot go outside without getting ticks. If you wanted to find a place worse for ticks than this area I don't know where it would be.
Whether or not it works is another question...but, none of mine have gotten sick so far, knock on wood. I don't just do the vaccine alone either, I keep them sprayed all the time with flea and tick preventive. It is so bad around here that a lot of people get Lyme's.

Edit: SRF, I am surprised to hear you guys have a tick problem up that way. I lived up there for two years {been a while} and there was none. I didn't see a tick the entire time and I spent a lot of time in the woods. Sorry to hear this. There was no heart worms either.

I get 3 dogs vaccinated for lymes....so far so good. And that's saying quite abit because people, dogs and horses have it around here. I just put my horse down last wk that had it during the winter. She also had foundered and was more a pasture pet than a rideable horse, but the vet didn't think more bute or antibiotics would help her, regardless of what was causing her lameness this time.

Just had my old female and my younger female vaccinated this year, yet to be determined if it will work. Figured it was better than having to put another one down like I did with my old male dog back in nov, lymes shut his kidneys down. My younger female tested positive for lymes before I had her vaccinated and had to go through the doxy before she could be vaccinated. My vet says it's a matter of time before they have a vaccine for humans but lymes is becoming real common down here and I didn't go many nights during the winter and not pick one off. Whether it works or not it's cheaper than treatment and worth more to me not to have to put another one down from it hopefully.

I have had 2 with Lyme, both treated and doing well now. I have 3 dogs vaccinated and my vet says that its not 100% effective, but should be combined with a good preventive program--in other words a tick preventive of some sort with the vaccine.

Do a little research, its not as effective as most vacs and less safe than most vacs. Furthermore, considering the number of other serious diseases from tick bites, keeping the ticks off (collars, topucals, monthly meds) makes more sense.
