-- Sick coon question... (http://forums.ukcdogs.com/showthread.php?threadid=928479202)

Sick coon question...

Caught a coon that has some places on him. Bald spots on head but not fresh like trying to get out of trap. Bad looking spot behind ear. It's a hairless spot with black looking spot on skin. Also a little bare spot between shoulders.

Wanted to release it and let some trainees hunt it. Should I be worried about a disease?

Do they get wolves?

This time of year I see just what you are describing on a lot of raccoon. I don't believe it is anything contagious or that a dog can catch. I have several guys that trap nuisance coon and turn them loose on my land. Again, this time of year I see it on many of them. I think it has more to do with shedding their winter coat of fur. Some of it could also be from getting in fights during the mating season.
I have ran quite a few coon with bald spots and scars and none of my dogs ever caught anything from them.

If I were going to trap and relocate a coon, I'd keep it in a holding cage for a few weeks. I want to make sure it isn't sick because I don't want to spread a disease. I'd want to fatten it up to help it survive until it founds its place in the new area. I'd also give it a wormer and treat it for ticks for the same reason.

My guess is it's a boar coon who has been rutting they have a scent gland there and during the rut rub a bald spot.

This all sounds real good on paper buddy...but, if I were going to worm, fatten up and de-flea/de-tick 27 coons a month I'd go broke!!!!! Many years ago I asked my vet what might be the best thing to do for relocated raccoon to help insure their survival...he said, "give them a rabies shot". He also said that worming them in the fall would help them to better get thru the winter, but living in the wild they quickly get re-infested with round worms as soon as the weather warms up.
You are just not going to keep a wild animal from picking up parasites if they are lose living in the wild. Feeders, den boxes and not killing them is what I have had work the best...some do, but not many stay around when relocated. They just leave, I think they are looking for home and wonder until they give up.

I can't imagine rehoming 27 coons a month. Maybe a few. I know they get worms as soon as they start eating all they crap they have to eat to survive. But the point is that being dewormed gives them a foot up in adjusting to their new place. If I could give rabies shot I would but not to 27 per month.
I think it would be humane to catch coons in urban or suburban areas where they are at risk of being killed on roads, rehabilitating them, and rehoming them. Just a thought. It's up to the individual. it kinda a free country.

if there is any question in my mind what so ever i dont let the dogs have it. I figure better safe then sorry and trap another that looks healthy without anything abnormal on it.

Just becareful relocating we have rabies up here and you can move a coon you don't even think is sick. And check your game laws on giving shots you can get your self into trouble
