Youth Involved?!

Just wondering how everyone gets youth involved in their clubs? Our club over the last few years has had a hard time getting them involved and coming to the events. This includes UKC events and non-licensed. We have a couple kids that are getting to the age where they really want to get involved but it is the same ones. Would be nice to get more involved.

Gotta keep busy

I have a 12 yr old who likes to go to the hunts , but his attention span is about 1hr . Try having youth only cast and 1 hr hunts , gotta keep young minds busy , squalling contest , treeing contest , shoot air rifles , etc.. good luck

I second the one hour hunt, my daughter likes it , but two hours wears her down. Lots of prizes, trophies are nice LOL

I agree this is a challenge and was eager to see what people had to say. The guy that I knew that has been the most successful at getting youth envolved had kids himself and his house was the teenager hangout for all of his kids buddies. He would talk to them about coon hunting and was always willing to take them hunting. He had some nice hounds that he would let them handle in the hunts and pay their entry. The kids had success in the night hunts and the seed took in some of them. I personally hate to hear people talk about 1 hr hunts because I just don't like them for multiple reasons. Some smaller kids may get wore down in 2 hour hunts but the older ones that are truly interested will be disappointed when it's over so quick. I sure wish I had the energy that they have! I think a person can take smaller kids too much and burn them out. Especially when weather conditions are rough. Good subject and good luck!

I can only speak to what i know. 20 years ago wheni was at that age 10-12i loved hunting hounds but quickly got a little bored with it for one reason. My dogs sucked. My dad had passed away in an accident a couple years earlier and spending money on dogs wasnt moms number one priority. If you want to keep youths attention with hounds then give them a hound to be proud of. And please dont give me that excuse that we arent helping them by giving them everything. They will learn to work for what they have. Hunting isnt suppose to be work its supose to be fun but any seasoned hunter will tell you that theres alot of work involved and the you g hunters will soon realize that as well. I had people give me dozens of hounds that you couldnt put them all together and make a good one. The hound doesnt have to be free but i bet you could get your grass cut a few times or something for a good hound. Things like this will show us who is serious about getting youth involved

agreed 100% a lot of folks have 5,6,7 yr. Old finished dogs not getting hunted or bred....pay it foward a man did this for me when I was young he gave me a 9yr. Old female I've been hooked every since!

you fellows are dead on with the dogs that suck. i've seen grown men lose interest in coon hunting more times than not it's because there dog sucks. they generally don't want to admit it and they blame it on lots of other things but it really boils down to there dogs suck and need culled.
