Puppy Training

Got a 5 month old Redbone puppy

Sire GRNITECH 'PR' HASTINGS HOLLAR OAK STEVE-O

Dam NITECH 'PR' WALKER MTN'S STILL WATER MICKI

I got her at 13 weeks, she had never been out of a pen before, after alot of familiarization training, she is comfortable/confident in the woods. Started her on working a track on a coon tail around the yard, always ending with it hung up in a tree. She has done great working these tracks and finding the tree in which the tail is hidden. I have been doing those short drags (50-150 yds) for about 3 weeks now. Currently she is 21 weeks. Took her a few times with older dogs in hopes she would go with them but she always stays right under my feet. Showed her a live coon, she showed no interest. She wasnt afraid of the coon, but just was not interested in it at all. Last night, took her to do a few drags in the woods. First drag was about 175 yds and she had to cross one small creek, she put an end to it and "treed" on the correct tree. Here is where my issue comes in. She is not opening at all on track, and once she gets to the tree, she will give 2 or 3 good barks and then she is done. She will come back and find me, then return to the tree but will never bark again. I have tried everything I know to get her to bark more but she just will not continue to bark.

I understand she is only 5 months, I am just looking for some guidance. This is my first puppy to ever train and from what I can understand, Redbones can be late starters.
Do I just need to continue doing what I'm doing with dragging the hide? I dont want to continue dragging and getting the same results with her leaving the tree but I dont know what else to do.

In the end I have 2 problems:

1- she doesnt like to get out from under my feet, and if she works a track she will come back and get under me again

2-she wont stay on a tree and reverts back to problem 1

Try taking her at night with older dog cut the older dog loose leave the pup in the box hunt the older dog two or three drop's then cut the pup loose with older dog if pup comes off tree switch and return to tree get pup back treeing repeat as needed

Stop the drags, its getting you nowhere. Be patient. She's a baby. We all think it's fun to watch a pup trail and tree a drag but , at this point you're over doing it. And pups hardly ever bark on a drag trail.

jmo

i would put her up for a couple months if it were me im old schol and usally never start 1 till thier close to a yr old then i would take her by herself where you know there's coon and she can run onto a hot track and just ignore her when she comes back id say your giveing her to much atteion that's why she is wanting to stay with you all the time plus she's only 5 months old i wouldn't expect much outa her at this age she is stil a puppy

What about taking her with older dogs? What I have been doing is turning her loose when we cut the older dog and if she goes with older dog I leave her alone and if she comes back to me I load her up in box or tie her off back away from me. So far, she runs anywhere from 20-80 yds with the older dog then comes back and finds herself being put back in the box.

Should I keep this up in hopes that she finally "gets it" or should I just quit all together with the hunting until she is older?

She's coming back because she's a baby and can't keep up. Please let her grow up. Would you put a second grader in a high school track meet?

Take it to the woods hunting with other dogs and let it be a pup. Don't pay it any mind it will go when ready. Then try turning a coon loose when it's 8 or 9 months old and start pushing on it then. Everyone wants a early starter but I like a steady learner give it time to grow up.

She 5 mo old not many go hunting at that age . Don't put her back in the box , don't tie her up when she comes in and don't switch her when she doesn't go and no more drags . If you want to turn loose live coon that's fine . Take her out any time you can for walks in the woods day or night and let her do her own thing . When hunting find you a comfortable spot and ignore her when she comes back ,she may or may not take off again , eventually with age she will go farther and farther . Starting pups takes more patience than many have . Above all remember she is 5 mo old not 12 .
