Problem treeing

I have a two and a half year old male that will run and tree by himself and is a pretty steady dog. What I can't figure out is when I get within 50 yds or so of the tree he stops treeing he won't leave and he'll be belly up when your light hits him he just won't make another sound. I've owned him since he was six weeks old so I know for a fact he was never disciplined for barking and never on a tree. He trees great when your on the way to the tree good steady chop. Just wondering if it will always be that way or can he be changed and how one would even begin to change him.

His daddy did that if its the dog I think your talking about. Just did at a way younger age. This was my fix. As soon as he stops treeing stop walking shut your light if and wait til he start treeing again, let him tree for a bit. If he stops treeing stop walking. It won't be long and he will get the picture. He is looking or waiting to hear your praise. So make sure your not talking to him on the way to the tree. Just my opinion.

I agree with Wade. (I can't believe that I just said that. ) When the dog stops, you stop. When the dog starts barking again, you start walking again.

I agree. Stop walking.

Stopping has "almost" always worked for me. I had one that I never could figure out though. He would shut up when I was 100 yards from the tree. It was by far the most aggravating thing I have ever dealt with in my years of dog training. Without a doubt the best young dog I have ever had, except for this problem. Still makes me sick thinking about it.
Be careful not to loose your cool with him. Ever.

Had a hound

That did this once, Herès what I did, when he stopped barking I stopped walking. I would just keep stop walking to him until he barked, soon he learned I would not go to him if he was not treeing and we fixed his problem. Of course we shot coons out to him when he did it right!! hope it helps!!

If the stopping don't work act lost.

The first litter of redbones I had there was a male I kept like this. I knew he would stay at the tree. So I'd act lost going in the opposite direction from him if sitting there didn't do it. I'd even call for him at times to get him treeing again if he was being a real hard head. He was the worst about it on dens. He could wind enough most of the time to tell if they were in or on the outside. If they were in you'd likely have to do all 3. Over time he did get over it but I could still tell when we had one on the inside of the tree. Of course there are some that won't bark when ya get there becuase they are waiting on the coon to roll out if they have seen a ton of fur. Most of those can be fixed by leashing them at the tree and walking away from it once they are going good then shoot it out at a much longer range than usual and afterwards vary the range to while just leaving some in the tree. Mixing up when and how their reward of coon comes will normally solve that one too.
