how do people get the numbers, letters, and logos on the sides of there hounds?

I think what you are asking about is called freeze branding. Never done it myself but think the process includes getting the branding iron very very cold and then branding the dog sort of like branding a calf. One difference is that you shave the area so the iron can make direct contact with the skin. It kills the pigment in the hair so that it grows back out white.

Depends what you are talking about. Field trialers paint or dy a number on using stencils.

Try doing a Google search for freeze branding irons. I did and sevferal popped up. You can pick a company and they will custom build one for you.
One other thing...It won't be real easy to get the dog to hold still for it. I think you have to hold it on for 20 seconds or so. You might want to get a vet to asist. He can give the dog something to knock it out for a few minutes to make it easier. That was what the guy that told me about it did. I'm sure that wherever you buy your iron will have better instructions.

Freeze Branding

There's a guy that does it at Black & Tan Days each year. Was in Flora Illinois 1st week-end in May. It's move to Mississippi now. He shaves the area he freeze brands 1st. You might be able to find someone that has cows or horses that freeze brands.
