Pros and cons

Just wondering about the pros and cons of hunting a year old pup on tire feeders. Not got a lot of coons so its hard to get a pup after a coon quick and it has to cover a lot of ground to find one. So I put out some feeders .

Here's my opinion on feeders, for what it's worth. I think they're ok to get a pup started on especially since you don't have many coon. In my experience the best way to use them is by attaching them to saplings on the edge of a slough etc. I say sapling because at least you'll be able to see the whole tree if he trees on it. Also I think it's best to move them around every week to. If you leave them in the same place your dog will just start checking the feeders and not hunting. I think the goal of having feeders should be to attract coons not drop a dog off right on top of one. Feeders are some what like training wheels in my book. They're a good starting place but eventually you need to remove them.

I agree with the post above. There ok to help get a dog started but don't use them too often. When I use them for a young dog I never turn loose within 100 yards of one and moving them around is a good may to make sure the dog hunts his area out before moving on.
