How much more do you guys typically average over green coon opposed to stretched and dried coon?

Thanks

At ULN Furs, I have gotten $3-$4 more for fur that is done right, and no, I didn't put them up myself. The key is "done right". If you aren't darn good at it, you will get less. They pay.50 cents for skinning so I don't even skin anymore.

I heard that its just hard if you don't have a buyer close. Hard to fine room for 100 whole carcass coon. Amish guy I think wants 2 dollars per coon to dry them debating if thats a good deal.

I paid a buck to have them put up and the guy did a pro class job of it. I thought that was incredibly cheap for all that is involved. 2 bucks prolly isn't out of line and if he is good, I'm sure you would gain more than double the 2 bucks when you sell.

I've gotten lazy in my old age. We have a buyer that we pass by every night going to the woods. We just drop them off as we kill them and take what we get. It's about one step above leaving them lay.

Putting fur up to me is a matter of my respect for the animal and pride that I get from handling the pelts well.

I skin the coons. Then I comb them out, and flesh them. If they have lots of blood on them I wash the blood out with cold water and blot dry with clean old rags. Then I use either clean sawdust or corncob grit to tumble the pelts in an old dryer without heat for 30-40 minutes. This step really cleans the fur and helps with the grease.

Then the skins are brushed again and pinned on wooden stretchers. They are dried at a temperature probably between 35-40 degrees with a fan to circulate the air. After the pelts are dry, I removed them from the stretchers, and whip off excess saw dust or corn cob grit from the leather with old clean rags. The pelt is then vacuumed. We then size and grade the pelts into bundles for sale.

We do get more for handling the pelts this way, but it is really sort of a labor of love that I enjoy doing in the evenings when the coons aren't moving.

Last year, I think our average was $18.00 something. The year before it was $23.50.

2 bucks more for stretched and fleshed, so i sell em green. Way to much work and mess for 2 bucks. If you decide to do your own make sure you have your buyer show you exactly how he wants them.
